A graduate of Stanford University, I spent the last 10 years working as a private tutor and mentor to elementary, middle, and high school students in Northern and Southern California. Now based in Los Angeles, I still keep regular private tutoring clients, but I have come to specialize in working as an independent academic consultant, assisting students in goal-setting, organizational skills, higher academic achievement, college admissions, career planning and transitional life skills.
My real talent and passion is identifying and honing a student's strengths. I love discovering what works best to ignite academic passion in a particular student. I work well (and patiently) with students who struggle with anxiety, lack of focus or disorganization.
I am available for independent counseling for the following:
Private/Group academic counseling
ISEE/PSAT test prep
Private academic tutoring, humanities specialization
Academic remediation and acceleration
Academic counseling for transfer students
Long-term academic/career planning
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ADVISING
Strength assessment/interpretation consulting
Choosing the ideal university for the individual student
Personal essay counseling and review
Scholarship application guidance

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 2 years experience teaching for the ISEE and SSAT exams, in all levels. I prepare students for Verbal and Math sections of the exams via skill review, exercises and practice tests. I offer individual brush-up sessions for quick test prep or a longer-term boot camp-style approach. I assess each new student and design those sessions based on the individual's needs. I don't over prescribe sessions, and have had much success ensuring that every one of my students improves scores, whether through a couple sessions or a dozen. My students have been accepted at LA private schools and some of the country's best preparatory academies.
I not only help improve students' general proficiency in the SAT Critical Reading and Verbal sections, but I teach to the strategy of the test. A great vocabulary and reading comprehension skills don't always translate into the desired or deserved verbal score. I have extensive experience teaching to the particular expectations of standardized testing and have proven success in helping students raise their verbal scores.
