About Deborah

I was born and raised in Singapore and currently reside in Los Angeles. I graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a First Class Honors Degree and won a scholarship from NUS to pursue my Masters by research which I completed in 2010.

I specialize in teaching mathematics and preparing students for the SAT and the ACT. I have more than 10 years of experience as math instructor, and as a Teaching Assistant at a collegiate level.

As an educator, I find it deeply rewarding to see my students grasp new concepts and come to realize that they can easily apply what they learn in a myriad of possible ways.

When I teach students, I focus on conceptual learning by giving them a solid foundation in the fundamental concepts of the subject at hand. While factual learning emphasizes the memorization of facts and the ability to recall them on demand, conceptual learning emphasizes the understanding of concepts and the ability to apply them skillfully and creatively, in all possible ways. I have used this approach in Math and SAT & ACT coaching, and have witnessed great success with all my students.

The goal for me is to enable my students to reach a point where they are able to grasp key concepts and progress in their studies without the help of a tutor. For me, this is a sure sign of success. As the philosopher Maimonides said, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Would you like to brush up your English writing and grammar skills so that you will be able to perform optimally on the ACT English Test?

I believe that I can help you to maximize your performance on the ACT English Test. English is my first language and has always been a subject that I excelled in while studying in high-school. I worked as a writer for an entertainment magazine and I have taught English as a second language to students from various countries. In addition to this, I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the National University of Singapore, guiding students in essay writing.

Apart from working through important grammar drills and writing/reading exercises pertinent to the test, I will also equip you with test-taking strategies and techniques for acing the ACT English Test. We will identify weak spots in your English skills that need work and then proceed to zone in on those problem areas. I am confident that with some planning and preparation, I will be able to help you get the score that you want for your ACT English Test.

ACT Math

I studied Mathematics from High School up to Junior College in Singapore. I scored straight 'A's throughout my O-Levels and A-Levels in both Elementary and Additional Mathematics. (The 'O' and 'A'-Levels are Standardized UK Based Examinations which adhere to rigorous standards of testing.) I also scored a 740 for the Mathematics section of the SATS when I was in high-school and was ranked in the 98th percentile.

Throughout University, I also tutored elementary and high-school students in Mathematics. This has kept me current on teaching methods in Mathematics and has honed my approach as a tutor. I am confident that I will be able to bring my students up to speed on any aspect of Mathematics that they might have difficulty with.

SAT Math

As a certified SAT instructor, I recognize that students vary greatly in their knowledge and grasp of math. Hence, apart from familiarizing them with the various questions in the SAT math sections and training them with SAT math exercises, I also give them standardized SAT Math tests and grade their tests so as to diagnose specifically which are their weakest areas. I then give them individualized training and math drills in those problem areas.

I train my students to work efficiently with math problems so that they are able to complete the SAT math sections quickly and accurately.
In addition to this, I also provide my students with specific test-taking tools and strategies that they would need to excel in the SAT.

SAT Writing

I have taught English to a wide range of students through college and through my graduate studies. As such, I have had years of experience catering to students of all levels of English proficiency. I have also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the National University of Singapore, coaching students in writing essays at a collegiate level. I use a specially prepared range of teaching material from grammer drills to writing exercises so as to enable my students to practice and internalize essential reading and writing skills for the SATs.

Writing

I worked as a writer for an entertainment magazine and I have taught English as a second language to students from various countries. I have had extensive experience in academic writing: as an undergraduate, I wrote an Honors Thesis to graduate with First Class Honors. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, I won a research scholarship to undertake a Master's Degree Program in Southeast Asian Studies. Over a period of two years (from 2008 to 2010) I researched for and eventually wrote my Graduate thesis. As a graduate student at the National University of Singapore, I also worked as a Teaching Assistant. I conducted tutorial sessions and coached college students in essay writing.

Teaching English writing gives me a chance to meet people from all walks of life and ethnicities. I enjoy working with people from a different cultural background as I learn as much from them as they do from me.
