About April

MUSIC EXPERIENCE:
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and an accomplished vocalist with 11 years of training. I've studied with the same vocal coaches as Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Whitney Houston and many more. I have been trained in genres ranging from Opera to Pop, Musical Theatre, Jazz and many others. I have also performed at popular venues such as Madison Square Garden, Patriots Stadium, CBGB, The Bitter End and more. As well as a vocalist, I'm a professional songwriter, currently writing with/for other artists in the industry.

LESSONS:
I want to help students build a foundation for healthy singing (in any style). I will teach basic technique and also cover vocal health. In addition, I can help those who want to work on performance technique, audition preparation, building a repertoire of songs, and help those who just want to sing for the fun of it! I also work with Singer/Songwriters and help them improve the performance of their own material.

**Songwriting lessons are also an option--depending on your experience level I can teach you 1) Ways to get started on a song (title ideas, melodic ideas, chord progressions etc.) 2) Different song forms (for example: verse-chorus/verse-refrain) and how to structure your songs properly, and 3) For those who have already been writing their own material, I can help critique songs and help students to make small changes if necessary.

Please let me know if you're interested in Voice/Songwriting lessons!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have been studying Solfege and Sight Singing for 15 years. I understand all parts of the major and minor scales, their functions within those scales, as well as which chords can be formed from which scale degrees.

I can help students identify intervals between pitches, understand chord progressions and the difference between major/minor/diminished/7th chords, identify rhythmic patterns, and much more.

I've studied Ear Training at Berklee College of Music, Moravian College, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark School of the Arts, as well as in my own private voice lessons over the past 11 years.

Music Theory

I have been studying Music Theory for 15 years. I understand all parts of the major and minor scales, their functions within those scales, as well as which chords can be formed from which scale degrees.

Sight Singing

I have been studying Solfege and Sight Singing for 15 years. I understand all parts of the major and minor scales, their functions within those scales, as well as which chords can be formed from which scale degrees.

I also know about rhythmic subdivisions and time signatures, and can sight read complex rhythmic patterns.

All of these skills allow for easy Sight Singing. The ability to look at a piece of music and sing it the first time through is a very valuable skill!

I've studied Sight Singing at Berklee College of Music, Moravian College, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark School of the Arts, as well as in my own private voice lessons over the past 11 years.

Songwriting

I have been writing songs since age 3, and it has been a passion of mine all my life. I love Pop, Rock, Folk, Jazz, Country, Blues, R&B --you name it!

I was a Professional Music Major at Berklee College of Music, with an emphasis in Songwriting and Voice. I was a recipient of Berklee's "Songwriting Achievement Award", and won many songwriting contests during my time there. I was also invited to perform my original music for people such as John Mayer, Paula Cole, Mike Reid (writer of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me"), Eric Beall (VP of Shapiro Bernstein Publishing), and many more.

My songs have also placed as finalists and semi-finalists in International songwriting competitions such as the ISC and UK Songwriting Competition.

I have been writing with/for artists in addition to myself, both in the US and abroad, and love collaborating with others to take a song to the next level.

Voice (Music)

I have had 11 years of formal voice training. I have studied Opera, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Contemporary Pop music and more.

I am well-versed in pedagogy/vocal health, and want to help students build a healthy foundation for singing. Between the proper warm-ups, breathing technique, voice placement and overall physical health, one can maintain a healthy voice for the rest of their lives.

I studied voice at Berklee College of Music, and also spent a year at Moravian College studying classical voice. I was also the recipient of a scholarship from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, which allowed me to study opera there for 4 years.

I am also a contemporary pop singer/songwriter, and I know how to take proper vocal technique and apply it to contemporary music for recording sessions, performances, playing while singing, etc.
