CONGRATS to my SAT and College Admissions Essay students who've been accepted to NYU, Syracuse, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, USC, Notre Dame, Loyola Chicago, Villanova, Boston University, University of Utah, University of Arizona, and more!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Having had tutors throughout my academic career, I understand the huge impact a tutor can make in a student's life. A great tutor not only helps a student feel more CONFIDENT about their study habits, but also challenges them to CONTINUE LEARNING about subjects that interest them.

I'm MEL and I'd love to work with you and your family! I have over 10+ YEARS of private TUTORING EXPERIENCE in subjects such as MATH, ENGLISH, STUDY SKILLS, and SAT and ACT TEST PREP from PRE-K through COLLEGE.

For students getting ready to APPLY TO COLLEGE, I offer help with SAT PREP, ACT PREP, COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ESSAY SUPPORT, SCHEDULING, etc. Junior and senior year can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be with planning. My SAT philosophy is based in MASTERY and MINDSET. I introduce my students to various test-taking strategies while incorporating mindfulness practices in order to decrease anxiety during testing. This unique approach has garnered major results, helping many students increase their SAT scores by hundreds of points.

As an early adopter of TECHNOLOGY, I can also help students learn shortcuts for MICROSOFT OFFICE (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT), APPLE related programs (PAGES, NUMBERS), and various SOCIAL MEDIA (FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, PINTEREST).

I'm a huge SUPPORTER of CRITICAL THINKING coupled with DISCIPLINED STUDY HABITS. I think it's important for students to be able to ask questions and voice their opinions, but at the same time, students must be willing to put in the time to learn new subjects and hobbies.

I'm also very keen on creating INDIVIDUALIZED SCHEDULES for my students who want to track their progress and ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

I look forward to working with you!

As a working professional, I use both web and print calendars to keep me up-to-date on on various tasks. I use Google Calendar, Sunrise, and various apps to track what I've completed and what other tasks I need to complete. I also help manage calendars for various directors and producers. As a graduate of UC Berkeley, not only did I have a full course load each semester, but I also worked part-time at the law library and actively participated in club organizations. I utilized my study skills by allocating time each Sunday to plan for the following week and to determine what priorities were of highest importance. Doing this allowed me to evenly distribute my time without stress. As a high school senior, I took 5 AP classes, managed the school newspaper and Future Business Leaders of America, and played piano competitively. I was able to create a cohesive schedule each week so I'd be able to attend to all of my activities.

Excellent teacher

Mel P. really helps our son’s high school English. She is very professional and found our son’s problems very well. She has great personality as well. My son is very picky, but he enjoys studying with her.

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Yoshi! I can see James' reading comprehension and writing skills increase as we continue working together. I appreciate his diligence and willingness to learn!

Great SAT Prep

Mel is fabulous. In just two prep sessions my daughter scores on pre test have raised by over 200 points. Today is her final session before the SAT tomorrow but I’m confident she will make her target score with the strategies Mel has taught her. My daughter feels much more confident and prepared since working with Mel and is ready for tomorrow’s test. I’ll update when I receive her scores. Thank you so much, Mel!

Knowledgeable and effective!

Not only does Mel know her subjects, her rapport with my 8th grade son was amazing. She motivated him to actually get ahead of his homework and projects. He went from almost flunking out and not graduating to getting qualified in less than 1 month. Of course it was 3x a week, but we’ll worth it. Best tutor ever!

Quick results--very proficient!

Our son struggled with Algebra 1 last year—this year with Algebra 2 we decided to get a tutor. Mel has had a couple lessons so far, our son is really starting to get a handle on it! Will continue to use and recommend Mel!

Good, skilled tutor

Mel has been so effective with helping our daughter that she has caught up with her work and no longer needs a tutor as of today. She had gotten so far behind, but with Mel's patient teaching style, she was able to work more quickly and effectively and finally "gets" math! Thanks Mel and thanks Wyzant for another success story!

Very encouraging first lesson!

Mel helped me review polynomials, identifying maximums and minimums, etc. She was easy to connect with and was helpful. We had planned on an in person session, but she got sick and so we had it online instead. That worked out okay, but I think I'll prefer the in person type once she feels better!

Tutor responded:

Hi, John and Laura, thank you for being open to online tutoring. I'm fully recovered now and ready for more in-person sessions! I appreciate your patience and understanding. I'm also very happy to hear Laura did a fantastic job on her test!
