About Emma

I support structural and mechanical engineering classes such as statics, dynamics, structural analysis, finite element methods, and vibrations. In addition to core classes, I can help you gain confidence with essential mathematics: matrix algebra, multivariable calculus, and differential equations.

I graduated from MIT with a SB in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Mathematics. After graduation, I obtained my mechanical EIT (engineer-in-training) certification and worked briefly as a mechanical engineer. I have been teaching for over a decade and tutoring regularly for the last five years. It all began with volunteer work and part-time jobs during college. Through the years, I have taught linear algebra for MIT's High School Summer Program; worked as a science instructor at the Newman School in Boston; and supported civil engineering majors at Northeastern University.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I frequently tutor calculus, and I have studied it from many angles. In high school, I scored 5/5 on both AP Calculus AB and BC examinations. At MIT, I aced multivariable calculus. I have also taken mathematical analysis, and it has given me insight into the theoretical development of calculus.

Civil Engineering

I have a SB in Civil Engineering from MIT. I specialize in the structural analysis of trusses, beams, and frames. I am very familiar with conjugate beam theory, the load displacement relationships, flexibility method, stiffness method, moment-distribution method, and energy methods.

Linear Algebra

I took linear algebra at MIT, and the concepts I learned reappeared ubiquitously throughout my engineering coursework. Because of this, I am very familiar with both the theory and engineering applications. I taught an informal introduction to linear algebra class and have many years of experience tutoring this subject.

Mechanical Engineering

I am a certified mechanical EIT (engineer-in-training). The certification process involves passing the FE, an eight hour exam that tests competency in mechanical engineering topics such as statics, dynamics, vibrations, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science.

Physics

I have an SB in Civil Engineering from MIT and many years of experience tutoring college physics. I can help you analyze trusses, beams, and frames; understand rotational motion; learn fluid mechanics; and grasp the meaning of conservation of energy and momentum.

Outstanding tutor — I provide my highest level of recommendation to Emma as a math tutor. She helped me through the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I had very little math experience prior to taking a very technical graduate program. I needed to take masters level calculus, probability, discrete math and statistics to complete my masters of science in computer information systems. Emma has a way of explai ...
