I have worked as a writer for 15 years and as a script consultant and screenwriter for six plus years. I currently am working as an immigration attorney who specializes in asylum. Part of this work includes teaching law students how to write effectively, persuasively and creatively.
I write fiction, non-fiction, columns, magazine articles and have done investigative reporting. I am fluent in Spanish, having lived extensively in Latin America, and I have spoken Spanish exclusively to my daughter since she was a baby. I have also taught Spanish to adults and children of all ages. I have worked as a writer for 15 years and as a script consultant and screenwriter for six plus years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Unlike most people, I love grammar. It makes sense to me and I love being able to explain it to others. As a writer, editor and a lawyer, I am well-versed in producing grammatically correct writing. I earn my living writing and editing and teaching others how to write well, in particular, using correctly-structured sentences and paragraphs. Grammar doesn't need to be boring; it can actually be fun, if taught in the right way.
I studied two years of Advanced Spanish at Cornell University and became fluent, when I lived, studied and worked in Colombia, South America. I have also lived in other countries in Latin America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Bolivia. I have taught Spanish classes to adults and children of all ages: in large classes, small groups and individually. I am flexible in my teaching methods and can concentrate on learning to speak Spanish as well as focusing on grammar, vocabulary and culture, whatever is most useful.
I have a BA from Cornell University and a JD from UC Hastings College of the Law. I have worked as a writer for more than 15 years -- as a columnist, journalist, essayist, script consultant, screenplay writer, short story writer and a writer of narrative nonfiction and memoir. I am passionate about good writing and helping others to edit, rewrite and learn to write well.
