I have extensive experience in public speaking and English, encompassing pre-K-12 and college students to business clients. I adore teaching and have an infectious passion for the English language. During my 12 years of tutoring, I've impacted K-12 children's reading and writing--from phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, hand printing, spelling, reading, and beginning sentence structure with pre-K-2 children, to grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, research, advanced writing, with grades 6-12 students. My college students achieve high grades on written English papers and in their Speech courses, while my business clients learn increased skills in marketing communications and major presentations. Finally, My experience includes teaching ESL to children from various countries, as well as business clients who need help with pronunciation and English grammar/writing/communication.

Having a gregarious nature and natural story telling and writing ability, I majored in speech communication at California State University Hayward-East Bay. There I joined the speech team, winning first place awards in persuasive speech, oral interpretation, and debate. Next, I achieved my master's degree in rhetoric theory, public speaking and speech communications. In this extensive program, I taught five college classes per semester while attending six graduate courses--each requiring frequent superior research papers.

Simultaneously, I was a debate and oratory coach, training and teaching undergraduate students to participate in speech tournaments at prestigious colleges and universities in the country.

Recruited to and promoted rapidly in advertising, I oversaw groups of five-twenty plus people. I taught comprehensive research skills as well as writing and presenting complicated media plans to clients. All of these people have been promoted to higher positions at advertising agencies and clients.

Throughout my career in advertising, I presented persuasive speeches for media campaigns to the heads of companies such as, Gerber Baby Food, S.C. Johnson, Mattel Toys, Tyco Toys, Disney, and Disneyland Parks-Hotels, The Home Depot, among others. My presentations consistently resulted in recommendations for advertising placement, and $MM increase added to budgets.

Corporate Training

Grammar,

Grammar

Students and business people alike believe they have a firm grasp of English Language grammar until they find themselves in the middle of an awkward sentence not knowing where to go next, what tenses to use, and how to fix dangling modifiers. As a superior tutor, I begin with the basic verb tenses, move to diagramming sentences; re-arrange subjects, verbs, adjectives and adverbs to create forceful and dynamic structure. I help the student understand how to develop a simple sentence into compound or compound-complex sentences, along with all basic grammar guidelines for future writing.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

As a college teacher and supervisor-V.P. account/media director at top advertising agencies and companies, proofreading was a daily process. Now in tutoring both adults and students, I assist organizing and writing essays and papers.

Phonics,

Phonics

Over the past six years I've tutored phonics to children K-3 with great success. Using worksheets, flashcards, exercises and oral practice, I teach word blends, clusters, consonants, final blends (-ng, -nk, -sh, etc.); sight word rules, long and short vowel sounds, syllabication, word families (e.g., "rime"-mat, flat, bat, sat) and the other conventions until the student's spelling and word recognition increases to the next grade level.
Reading,

Reading

My students during my eight+ tutoring years have increased their reading skills, evidenced by school grades and teacher input (via parents). In each session, we practice phonics, pronunciation, syllables, spelling rules, vocabulary; then we dive into the magic world of reading. I incorporate the Reading A-Z Fluency Passages, designed for one-minute reading text; reading out loud; also I use exercises and reading comprehension worksheets. The key to reading is practice, practice, practice--until you are sailing through the pages of any book.
Spelling,

Spelling

English is a difficult language to spell because sight far outweighs phonetic words. At all levels, K-12 through adult, my tutoring method begins slowly with repetition, beginning with phonetics and delving into learning/memorizing detailed spelling rules: -ceed/-cede, -ful, -i before e, adding prefixes and suffixes, consonants in words of more than one syllable; words beginning in –e; long and short vowel sound (-c, -cc, -k, -ck, when to use –tch after a short vowel, -ch otherwise, -kw always spelled with –qu, -le endings, consonant rules, etc. Finally, easily confused words; all rules are used in daily spelling exercises.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I took a Speed Reading and Study Skills class after my Freshman year in college in order to improve my muddled study habits. Incorporating these skills to further courses, caused success not only completing a Geography minor and Speech Communication major at a California State University, but achieve my Master's Degree in Speech. My tutoring incorporates study skills and teaching students note-taking, research, reading signals for speed and guidelines for comprehension.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

With my passion for reading the classics, philosophy, theology and complicated literature packed with sophisticated words and hidden symbolism--I've kept a personal vocabulary notebook all my life. Teaching vocabulary is one of my sheer joys in tutoring, as I direct students to begin their own journey of words. Understanding sounds, root meanings, syllabication and correct usage of words have helped students quickly develop an advanced vocabulary at any age K-12 grade, college, and business people alike.

After my freshman year in college I began reading the classics: Shakespeare, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, George Elliot, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Camus, Kafka, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Dickens, Bronte, Austin, James Joyce, Faulkner, Joseph Conrad, etc. Currently, I consume three books a week despite a busy schedule, pausing to write captivating paragraphs in my journals.

Very knowledgeable, energetic and patient

I had a wonderful session with Miriam before I had to give a big speech. It was very helpful -- the speech went very smoothly, thanks to her. I'd highly recommend her to others looking for a public speaking coach.

Help With Debate

My son tells me the enthusiasm that Miriam brings to class just revives him, even though his tutoring is late Friday afternoon. He finds Miriam very articulate and she makes the class interesting. He plans to prep better so that he can have more discussion with Miriam. Thanks

Patient and knowledgeable tutor!

Miriam is an incredibly kind and talented tutor. She tutored me for my public speaking class, and worked with me very patiently and was flexible in terms of scheduling a time. She helps me on my assignments in her own time and stayed late when an assignment was due so that we could finish it. Could not have asked for a better tutor. Thank you Miriam!

Remarkable Tutor

Look forward to another lesson with Miriam soon. Our lessons emphasize in business writing, grammar, pronunciation, and spelling. We are making progress on clauses, proposition, complex and compound sentence. Never knew complex compound sentence exists for the last 20 something years in my life until she elaborates her knowledge of grammar rules.

Emily, 62 lessons with Miriam

Great tutor

Miriam is such a nice teacher because she arrives prepared with material related to my field of business. She works with intense passion of her love of the English language, both written and oral. She delivers analysis and correction with boldness and brutal honesty. She strives to perceive the client's comprehension, regularly pausing to check with oral discussion. Her knowledge and experience in the business arena enables us to edit my important presentations quickly and easily together. For clear pronunciation, she uses all available materials, websites and face/voice/mouth/tongue positions; demanding me to watch and implements serious repetitive practice. Her public speaking enthusiasm is contagious and she coaches my current and future presentations by providing introduction and transition phrase ideas, stressing eye contact and confidence.
