Due to vast experience in public speaking and writing, my tutoring range covers pre-K-12 and college students to business clients I adore teaching and have an infectious passion for the English language. Throughout eight years of tutoring, I've impacted K-12 children in reading and writing--from phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, hand printing, spelling, reading, and beginning sentence structure with pre-K-2 children, to grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, research, advanced writing, with grades 6-12 students. In this extensive program, I taught five college classes per semester, while attending six graduate courses--each requiring frequent superior research papers.
Simultaneously, I was a debate and oratory coach, training and teaching undergraduate students to participate in speech tournaments at prestigious colleges and universities in the country.
Recruited to and promoted rapidly in advertising, I oversaw groups of five-twenty plus people. I taught comprehensive research skills as well as writing and presenting complicated media plans to clients. All of these people have been promoted to higher positions at advertising agencies and clients.
Throughout my career in advertising, I presented persuasive speeches for media campaigns to the heads of companies such as, Gerber Baby Food, S.C. My experience with Miriam has been fantastic. She has proven to be more than just reliable and prompt. Miriam comes to each session very well prepared. She arrives ready with her research completed and materials for the lesson in hand.
She has been able to inspire my fourth-grader to enjoy studying English. She has shown a level of enthusiasm that is infectious, as well as helped develop writing techniques and grammar skills and understanding that were lacking from my daughter's classroom curriculum. In addition, she has been a great sounding board and mentor for my ninth-grader, developing ideas and concepts for writing in her analytical literature course.
I'm glad that we found Miriam. She has been instrumental in my children's ability to learn and retain skills that I'm sure will prove to be invaluable.
- Update 4/10/2014 -
I cannot give enough praise to Miriam for all of her help with my fourth grader. Miriam helped her refine her speech and compact it onto only eight note cards that helped jog her memory enough to make it through the entire presentation almost effortlessly. My daughter was fearful of going in front of her class until Miriam instilled her with the confidence and poise she needed for public speaking. It was an amazing accomplishment.
She never would have been able to do it on her own. I feel that Miriam didn't just help my daughter through this one assignment; she gave my daughter advice on how to structure her speech and techniques to deliver her presentation that will help her for future projects.
Look forward to another lesson with Miriam soon. Our lessons emphasize in business writing, grammar, pronunciation, and spelling. We are making progress on clauses, proposition, complex and compound sentence. Never knew complex compound sentence exists for the last 20 something years in my life until she elaborates her knowledge of grammar rules.
Per student, "She is funny, nice and she helps me to learn my English and how to do my parts of speech."

For clear pronunciation, she uses all available materials, websites and face/voice/mouth/tongue positions; demanding me to watch and implements serious repetitive practice. Her public speaking enthusiasm is contagious and she coaches my current and future presentations by providing introduction and transition phrase ideas, stressing eye contact and confidence.

I have chosen Miriam to be the tutor for my five year old son who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. Miriam knows how to make the lessons enjoyable by incorporating strategies that will let my son learn and focus. My son has a very shy character and Miriam makes sure that he lets him come out of his shell. They sings songs, draw, color, but Miriam makes sure that my son is getting something out of this. My son enjoys his lessons with Miriam and is always looking forward to his next session. Miriam is the best tutor.
Miriam helps my daughter in English -- grammar, vocabulary and writing! She makes it fun, helps her to organize her thoughts, get them on paper and most importantly, she maintains a patient energy about herself which is a powerful tool to motivate and reward my daughter for her efforts. It has been three weeks and Miriam established a rapport with my daughter. We appreciated Miriam's patient and her way of teaching. We are confident and hopeful that her skills to keep the sessions focused and moving at a good pace will help our daughter to excel in her comprehension and writing.
She is very sweet and encourages my enthusiasm to learn! Our sessions have become one of the highlights of my week. I will be continuing on with her for a very long time. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a patient, caring, enthusiastic tutor who makes learning easy and fun!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
English Language Arts, encompassing grammar--sentence structure, figurative, language, text structure(compare/contrast, problem-solution, cause-effect, etc.); subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, creating compound and compound/complex sentences.
Students and business people alike believe they have a firm grasp of English Language grammar until they find themselves in the middle of an awkward sentence not knowing where to go next, what tenses to use, and how to fix dangling modifiers. As a superior tutor, I begin with the basic verb tenses, move to diagramming sentences; re-arrange subjects, verbs, adjectives and adverbs to create forceful and dynamic structure. I help the student understand how to develop a simple sentence into compound or compound-complex sentences, along with all basic grammar guidelines for future writing.
I became an avid reader in sixth grade, reading three books above required list in school per week; summers I consumed six-- History and human quandaries captured my imagination. After my freshman year in college I began reading the classics: Shakespeare, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, George Elliot, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Camus, Kafka, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Dickens, Bronte, Austin, James Joyce, Faulkner, Joseph Conrad, etc.
Currently, I consume three books a week despite a busy schedule, pausing to write captivating paragraphs in my journals.
Over the past six years I've tutored phonics to children K-3 with great success. Using worksheets, flashcards, exercises and oral practice, I teach word blends, clusters, consonants, final blends (-ng, -nk, -sh, etc.); sight word rules, long and short vowel sounds, syllabication, word families (e.g., "rime"-mat, flat, bat, sat) and the other conventions until the student's spelling and word recognition increases to the next grade level.
As a college teacher and supervisor-V.P. account/media director at top advertising agencies and companies, proofreading was a daily process. Now in tutoring both adults and students, I assist organizing and writing essays and papers.
I majored in Speech Communication and Public Speaking and taught Public Speaking during and after obtaining my Masters Degree and California Lifetime Community College Speech Communication and Public Speaking Certificate. I used persuasive speaking throughout advertising career, convincing highly visible client to invest millions in advertising campaigns.
My students during my eight+ tutoring years have increased their reading skills, evidenced by school grades and teacher input (via parents). In each session, we practice phonics, pronunciation, syllables, spelling rules, vocabulary; then we dive into the magic world of reading. I incorporate the Reading A-Z Fluency Passages, designed for one-minute reading text; reading out loud; also I use exercises and reading comprehension worksheets. The key to reading is practice, practice, practice--until you are sailing through the pages of any book.
English is a difficult language to spell because sight far outweighs phonetic words. At all levels, K-12 through adult, my tutoring method begins slowly with repetition, beginning with phonetics and delving into learning/memorizing detailed spelling rules: -ceed/-cede, -ful, -i before e, adding prefixes and suffixes, consonants in words of more than one syllable; words beginning in –e; long and short vowel sound (-c, -cc, -k, -ck, when to use –tch after a short vowel, -ch otherwise, -kw always spelled with –qu, -le endings, consonant rules, etc. Finally, easily confused words; all rules are used in daily spelling exercises.
I took a Speed Reading and Study Skills class after my Freshman year in college in order to improve my muddled study habits. Incorporating these skills to further courses, caused success not only completing a Geography minor and Speech Communication major at a California State University, but achieve my Master's Degree in Speech.
My tutoring incorporates study skills and teaching students note-taking, research, reading signals for speed and guidelines for comprehension.
With my passion for reading the classics, philosophy, theology and complicated literature packed with sophisticated words and hidden symbolism--I've kept a personal vocabulary notebook all my life. Teaching vocabulary is one of my sheer joys in tutoring, as I direct students to begin their own journey of words. Understanding sounds, root meanings, syllabication and correct usage of words have helped students quickly develop an advanced vocabulary at any age K-12 grade, college, and business people alike.
During my eight years in tutoring, I helped K-12 students significantly advance in their reading and writing. I have the intuitive ability to find the roadblocks in comprehending within a child's mind. Further,I have experience writing extensive research paper, which results in graduate school (A and A- grades), along with years of researching and writing complicated marketing/media plans for major advertising agencies and companies, provides me a superior command of the English language and writing capabilities.
Also, I have a personal passion for writing, an extensive vocabulary, and am familiar with MLA and APA research composition college writing formats.
