About Jay

Hi there, my name is Jay. Here's a little about myself and my style of teaching:

My first tutoring job came to me unexpectedly during high school. I saw a fellow student named Raj in the library after school, cursing and pounding his fists at his chemistry textbook while trying and ultimately failing at a certain problem set. Having taken the class the previous year and done quite well, I felt inclined to offer my assistance. I explained the concepts in as simple terms as possible, while using analogies involving popular video games at the time, and I watched as his frustration changed into satisfaction and enjoyment. He asked me for my assistance many times over the course of the week, and my approach must have made an impact since Raj's mother eventually came and thanked me for helping her son, and offered me my first tutoring position.

Especially with the sciences, I find that most students get confused not by the simple concepts, but rather by the complex terminology that teachers use in the classroom. I enjoy breaking down difficult to understand concepts by using simple, every-day analogies, and only introduce academic terminology after the student has firm understanding of the material. I'm also a huge fan of demonstrations! Chemical reactions written on paper are no comparison to actually seeing real-life examples.

Science and Mathematics are definitely my academic strong points, but I have a special place in my heart for Chemistry. I was previously a Chemistry tutor during high school (Terra Nova High School) for about a year, and during college (UC Santa Cruz) for about two years. Throughout my schooling, I've had both positive and negative experiences from teachers, and I've learned that an effective teacher can keep students engaged not by being incredibly strict, but by having mutual respect between themselves and their pupils, and trying to relate the material as much as possible to what the students are interested in. I hope to emulate those positive experiences.

Finding a tutor that works well with you or your child isn't the easiest task. My understanding is that most students who look for tutoring aren't necessarily in need of another teacher who rehashes the material in the same exact way as the course instructor. I think these students need the material presented in a different manner. I really emphasize creating an informal and relaxed relationship with my students that is more along the lines of a friend helping a friend rather than an authoritative teacher dishing out information.

I'm currently a first year student at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. I'm loving it so far, and I can definitely find time to help you out!

Lastly, the first session is always free. You can read everything I write here and hopefully learn something about me, but there's no substitute for actually trying something first hand!

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading and I hope to see you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I received a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I really enjoy teaching biology to anyone who is interested.

Chemistry

I took two years of high school chemistry (regular and AP) and three quarters of college level chemistry. I also tutored Chemistry in high school for one year, and then two years in college. I have over 20 hours of recent experience tutoring in this subject.

Excellent Tutor — Jay is very professional in what he does. He arrives right on time and is very thorough. He doesn't waste time chit-chatting (which is appreciated since paying by the hour) and gets right into the topics. My son said he explains the materials they cover in an effective way and feels comfortable with Jay. My son has a test Monday so we will see how well the tutoring has helped. ...
