About Nicholas

I grew up on the plains of South Dakota and completed my undergraduate degree in Biology as a Trustees Fellow Scholar at Augustana College, a small private liberal arts school. I completed two competitive, paid summer research internships--one performing biomedical research and the other a National Science Foundation program in Texas studying coastal river ecosystems. These research experiences in addition to my semester spent abroad in Denmark (studying marine environmental biology) lead me to pursue a career in oceanography. I am currently a third-year College Doctoral Fellow in the Earth Sciences PhD program at the University of Southern California. My thesis research seeks to further our understanding of how life in the oceans impacts Earth's atmosphere, and I have authored two scientific papers on the subject which are currently under peer review.

I have previously been a teaching assistant for GEOL 108: Crises of a Planet (two semesters) and GEOL 107: Oceanography (one semester) at USC in the Earth Sciences department. I have also TA'd both semesters of introductory Biology (BISC 220 and 221) for the USC Biology department. Additionally, I have mentored two undergraduates in summer research internships and am presently mentoring two high school students through the USC Young Researchers' Program.

--My Services and Availability
I offer tutoring in sciences (particularly chemistry, biology, and the earth sciences) up to an intermediate collegiate level. I am capable of assisting students in advanced collegiate coursework in several specific subjects, please contact me for details. I offer ACT, SAT, and GRE test preparation tutoring and help with preparing undergraduate and graduate college applications. I also can help with general academic writing and proofreading.

As a graduate student researcher, my schedule is generally quite flexible.

I am happy to travel within the greater Los Angeles area to meet students at their homes or at convenient public locations (e.g. schools, libraries, etc). I reserve the right to ask a higher hourly rate for sessions more than a 30-minute commute to help defray my transportation costs.

Excellent!

After the first lesson, we're excited to continue the tutoring. We thought it a good idea to observe the first lesson and see if this was going to be a good fit. It was and we couldn't be happier! Nicholas is patient, asking my son lots of questions to make sure he understands the formulas and concepts. Having my son show him that he understands it, after he explains it. My son grew more conf
