About Anne

Dear Students and Parents,

(Updated as of 2017) I just moved to LA with my family. I am a formerly practicing attorney with admission to the Maryland bar who is looking to tutor students in English, reading, spelling, writing and public speaking. I believe that patience is key when tackling a subject that does not come easy to a person. Due to the nature of my education, I believe in discipline and having serious study habits. That said, I also know that some subjects are not fun for all, and I will do my best to make it more pleasant and enjoyable for any student. Did I mention I'm also pretty funny?

From my days in court, I love public speaking and have strong reading and writing skills. I can help you and-or your children acquire and develop skills in reading, writing, spelling, and public speaking.

Please note: I am the type of tutor who will assist you in homework or assignments you have right now. I do not subscribe to any particular textbooks or manuals on how to study, etc. When we meet, if you have those types of books, I would love to see them and see how I can help you achieve your goals.

Law students/mock trial high school & college students: I am particularly good at trial advocacy, having been an adjunct faculty member at Univ. of Baltimore School of Law, for the National Trial Competition team.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I just took the Maryland Bar Exam in July, 2010. I passed the exam and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in December, 2010.

The Bar Exam consists of a multiple choice section, short essay section, and one larger essay section which requires the student to read and analyze an assignment. If certified to do so, I can help train a student to take the multiple choice section with a special attention to the essay portion as this is the weightier portion of the exam. I enjoy writing and look forward to showing students the difference between legal writer and "bar exam" writing.

Public Speaking

I am an attorney, currently working in employee and labor relations. I attend hearings on a consistent basis, as well as conferences with management and employees. My job requires me to do public speaking before judges, lawyers and employees frequently. Since 2010, I have been an adjunct professor at UB Law. I coach law students on different types of public speaking, including opening statements, closing arguments, motions and giving presentations. With confidence, a solid understanding of English grammar, and good preparation of the subject one is going to speak about, anyone can improve their public speaking skills. I believe that with a combination of having discipline and having a positive attitude, public speaking can be something to be enjoyed, not feared.

Spelling

I would not have been able to get through law school and take the bar, and pass the bar, had I not been an exceptional writer: which is where the spelling part comes in. I take great pride in my spelling and having practiced law in Maryland, I could not submit a single document to any court without having perfect spelling and grammar. I only use "Spell Check" in MS Word as a final check on my spelling. While writing and typing, I make sure I edit and check my spelling as I go. I type fast (more than 110 wpm) so spelling errors a priority for me. I would love impart my love of spelling to students, as I see in this world we live in now, spelling is the last thing on their minds!

Vocabulary

I graduated from Montclair State University where I received my B.A. in English. Naturally, being an English major requires one to have a strong grasp of vocabulary. I then went on to law school at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where my vocabulary knowledge expanded to include legal vocabulary. After graduating, my vocabulary expanded yet again to accommodate whatever area of law I was practicing. Whether it was family law, business law, bankruptcy law, administrative law or employment law, I had to learn new vocabulary.

Writing

I graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State University with a B.A. in English. I was required to write a plethora of papers, including: fiction, non-fiction, research, etc. I then went on to the University of Baltimore School of Law, where I received my J.D. For three years I learned the art of legal writing. After law school, I wrote legal memoranda, motions, briefs, answers to deposition requests, etc. while I worked in both private and governmental legal sectors.
