About Martin

The following provides an overview of my teaching experience:

Project Management - taught Project Management at Cal tech(IRC) and at University of California-Irvine

ESL - Began teaching ESL and specialized in preparing people for the TOEFL exam in the UK in the early 1970's with the progenitor of the field. Have continued to tutor foreign students and adults ever since.

Film and Theater - Film and theater, as well as the history of each, - have taught both in the US and Abroad - participated in one of first film in public high school programs during my student teaching, at North Reading High School, N. Reading, MA. My experience includes creative dramatics for grade school students to providing acting coaching for adults.

Adult education - I just recently finished a 2 year project for a global manufacturer - adult training for their service personnel, and have also provided adult training in executive soft skills. This project included ROE/ROI metrics and certification.

Because I work with all age groups, I try to find the best teaching/tutoring approach for the participant/student's needs and design the sessions so that each student sees his progress and builds on his success. Adult learning is vastly different from a 6th graders - a different paradigm, and requires a completely different approach. In addition, every student, regardless of age, learns at a different pace and responds differently to different methodologies. The tutor/student relationship offers the opportunity to fine tune the delivery of the material while providing the best chance for success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I was trained as an EOL teacher in 1972 at International House, London, England. This was before the masters courses that eventually became the standard in the US. I taught at International House for several years specializing in TOEFL prep and on returning to this country taught at a Japanese run school (International School of Languages) in Beverly Hills. Additionally, I taught and worked with foreign graduate students at Northrop University, focusing primarily on helping them take classes in English and writing their theses.

Recently as an adjunct to re-engineering the training for a global manufacture/service provider, I bench-marked the level of English in each of their regions.

Film

I was a graduate of the National Film & Television School UK. As the President of Lightflex America, I collected on behalf of the company and the inventor of Lightflex, an Academy award for technical achievement.
Films on which I was the Lightflex consultant: The Wiz, Dune, To Be or Not To Be, The Dark Crystal, Testament
I provided script breakdowns, budgets and schedules for numerous independent productions.

Microsoft Project

I gave taught MS Project since it was first released as 1A. I have taught the program for UCI and Caltech Industrial Relations Center.

Theatre

My BA is in Theater. I have taught creative dramatics to grade school children. I've taught theater on the high school and college level. I was an associate producer with Candida Plays, an Arts Council of Great Britain company, and toured throughout the UK.

Video Production

I am a graduate of the National Film & Television School. I was the president of the Lightflex America Company and consulted on numerous features, television projects and commercials. As a board member of Imagocorp, I have made informational and training video podcasts. I was a consultant on the prototyping of a new video camera which could run at speeds up to 100,000 fps. I use Final Cut Pro and Final Draft for my own work, and have taught basics to others.
