If your child is reading below grade level, I can help. I have had tremendous success with students who have been socially promoted up to 10th grade, yet who were reading 4 to 5 years below their current grade level.
Having earned a Master's Degree in Special Education at Vanderbilt as well as being a licensed teacher with experience in schools from the inner-city to the suburbs, working with students in all grades, at all levels of academic achievement, I can safely say one thing: Every child is born with infinite potential and yours is no exception. Just because that potential hasn't been tapped up until now does not mean it's not there, it just means your child needs to be reached in a different way; and that's what I do.
I use intensive, individual, research-based instructional methods tailored to your child's specific strengths and weaknesses. We'll work hard, but we'll have fun because every tutoring session will be geared towards giving your child opportunities to succeed. And that's the secret that nobody will tell you about teaching kids who have difficulties: Success breeds success. It's like building blocks: one right answer is the foundation for another right answer, a higher level of confidence, and a deeper level of understanding, all of which builds into a high level of competence that meets or exceeds grade-level standards and leads to the love of reading and writing that is so important in enriching your child's life. If your child is reading below grade level, I can help. Lisa is everything we could have asked for in a tutor. She is dependable, on time and is always well prepared for my daughter's session. She arrives early and stays past her required time. My daughter has made great strides this summer under Lisa's guidance. I really think that my daughter's reading struggles are close to being over due to the time she has spent with Lisa.
Lisa is a wonderful person and an excellent instructor. She really understands the students needs and helps them succeed by teaching them useful techniques. My daughter and I could not be happier.
My son is a special education student and was reading several years below his grade level. So far, he has completed 5 sessions with Lisa and we are very pleased. She truly cares about his well-being and his future. She incorporates his interests into the lessons and builds his self-esteem through her encouraging words and positive attitude. We look forward to continued growth and future sessions with Lisa!
Lisa has been amazing with our 7 year old son. She immediately made a connection with him. She adapts her lessons to his strengths and weaknesses accordingly and he loves spending time with her. She has an animated and creative teaching style which truly makes learning fun. She initiates great ideas and it is very apparent that she loves what she does. Lisa is also extremely prepared for each lesson; having customized lesson plans, worksheets and ideas. She is a great communicator, always keeping us abreast of progress and is consistently punctual and professional. Lisa has been a great asset to our family and we are lucky to be working with her.
Lisa is very experienced with special needs kids. She has a great bag of tricks to keep it interesting and fun for my easily distracted child. She made the lesson fun! She is smart, educated and has extensive knowledge of how kids learn.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Child Study from Smith College, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Vanderbilt University. I hold Clear California Specialist Instruction K-12, and Level II Multiple Subject K-6 licenses. I am NCLB Highly Qualified in Elementary K-6, Language Arts K-12, and Reading K-12, and have earned both my CLAD and Added Autism Authorization. I have had great success with my students, all of whom read two or more years behind grade level when they began tutoring with me. I am expert at using explicit, direct teaching of phonics to improve both fluency and comprehension. I am also expert at teaching phonemic awareness, not just through what the child can hear, but how it feels and looks when he or she pronounces a particular phoneme. Many children with severe reading difficulties have trouble hearing the difference between the short i and the short e sounds for instance. When I show them the difference in how those sounds look in a mirror and feel in their mouths, they are able to differentiate them, thus improving their decoding skills dramatically. I employ the Fischer Decoding Mastery Test to assess trouble spots, and then design individual lessons to address the remediation of these particular difficulties. Using these methods, I have helped my students move from Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM) baselines of 8 - 10 words read correctly per minute, to 30 -35 words read per minute in just a few (8 - 20), one-hour sessions.
