I am a high school English teacher in Los Angeles. I have a Master of Education from UCLA. I completed my undergraduate career at the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in English with coursework in education. This was a particularly joyous occasion because I was selected to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I am very fortunate to attend two of the nation's best schools. UC Berkeley's English department is ranked number one and UCLA's Education department is ranked in the top 10.
I have extensive tutoring experience, including working with students facing particular challenges. I have served two AmeriCorps terms. The first was through the Foster Youth Mentor Program where I worked with foster youth and prepared them for emancipation. The second year was through a program called Destination: College, where I worked with at-risk youth in Berkeley/Oakland. I have done SAT and Exit Exam tutoring. All but one of my students have passed the exit exam on their first try after working with me. I currently teach English at a local high school.
I am a firm believer in individual learning plans and treating every student on a case by case basis. I adapt my teaching styles according to each person's individual learning style. I try to achieve the greatest benefits with the least amount of "work." As cliche as it sounds, learning can and should be fun. I am a high school English teacher in Los Angeles. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a high school teacher I have many years of experience helping students with career development. I have worked with students on searching career fields that match their personal interests. After students have shown an interest in a specific career I have worked with them to research the qualifications needed and together we come up with a plan to meet those qualifications. I have also worked with students on preparing for the job hunt. I have helped students create resumes and cover letters from scratch and worked with them on interview tips and techniques.
Being an educator I have personal experience taking CBEST. I passed the CBEST on my first attempt and am very familiar with content needed to get a passing score.
As a high school teacher, I have worked with numerous students on the entire college application process. This includes: searching for schools, working on applications, and planning for the transition. I have also worked with students on searching and applying for scholarships. I have a Bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and a Master's from UCLA.
I am a high school English teacher with a Master of Education degree. I have developed and implemented Common Core based units for English 9 and 11.
I have been using a Macintosh for academic and work related purposes for the past 7 years. I have experience helping my students transition from a PC to a MAC and learning shortcuts.
As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, I took a variety of education courses. Theses courses taught me about learning styles and differentiation. Learning styles and differentiation helped me become a better tutor because I realized not everyone learns in the same manner. With this being said, not everyone studies in the same manner. I was able to bring this knowledge to my tutoring sessions and helped students develop better study skills. Much of this was the result of organization, but it was also presenting the material in an accessible manner.
I am now a graduate student in the education department at UCLA and am teaching in a local high school. I am constantly developing my teaching styles and learning how students study. I have learned to create unique methods to developing study skills for students. I try to incorporate visual, kinesthetic, and auditory elements to my study sessions in order to appeal to the different types of learners.
I have also taken courses on educational psychology so that I have learned about different learning theories and how these learning styles can produce intellectual growth. These learning styles have made me more aware of different study styles and the ways that people learn. I feel that based on my mix of course work with practical application I am confident in my ability to help students who need improvement with their study skills.
