As a seasoned tutor and teacher, I have experience in helping students who are behind in reading, writing and math. In my experience I have seen students reach their grade level in 20 hours or less of tutoring. I've worked with a variety of students at all different levels ranging from first grade through high school. Former students describe me as knowledgeable and persistent. I still keep in touch with my former students and they relay that certain lessons helped them remember how to answer a question on a test. For example, knowing the difference between the words “where”, “wear” and “were”. The reason I connect with students is I try several different approaches to help engage the student to learn the material being taught.
When I teach in the classroom, I do not underestimate my students and start challenging them from the start by providing them with vocabulary to help them advance as well as build their reading and writing confidence. I also spend a good amount of time encouraging those students who tend to struggle with their schoolwork. The most important thing you should know is I will not give up on your child.
By using a combination of socio-cultural and constructivist approaches to develop academic success, your child will be able to construct her or his own answers, take risks in answering questions and develop strong reading comprehension, writing, increased vocabulary plus gain an overall stronger recall of material in school.
Recently, I became CELDT certified to administer the CELDT test which students K-12 are required to take if their primary language is not English.
I can come to your home, assess your child’s strengths and areas of challenge, and craft learning goals that will be tailored towards improving her or his confidence and overall retention of the material. By having a plan designed to meet the academic goals you desire from your child, I can help your child go to her or his current grade level or go beyond.
I also tutor students on the undergraduate and graduate level. My master's program required a tremendous amount of writing case studies, presentations, analysis, personal statements and research papers, so these are all areas I can assist you with.
Some of my former students have kept in touch and let me know how they are doing in school. It is rewarding to know that they are academically stronger and the extra guidance they received from tutoring has helped them overall improve academically.
I would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Please contact me with any questions you may have! As a seasoned tutor and teacher, I have experience in helping students who are behind in reading, writing and math. In my experience I have seen students reach their grade level in… Read more
Melissa came to us at a time my son was truly struggling in his studies. He was challenged in many areas and lacked the confidence to move forward. After speaking with Melissa briefly, I was initially struck by her own confidence and calm approach.
My son immediately took to Melissa. He looked forward to spending his time with her and he rapidly gained the confidence to begin to enjoy school. Her individualized plan and positive reinforcement approach gave my son a new set of experiences to take into the classroom and thrive!
She turned out to be the most influential person in my son's educational experience so far, surpassing even his teacher's at school. You would be very lucky to have Melissa help to guide your child into a enriched, fun, and personal learning experience. I know we are all better for having had her in our lives.
I highly recommend Melissa B. as a tutor. I was initially impressed with Melissa’s enthusiasm and optimism. She is very patient, organized, efficient, extremely competent, and has an excellent rapport with people of all ages. She has great teaching skills. She is my son's tutor. We like her pleasant and positive attitude.
Melissa has been coming to our house for a month now and our daughter works really well with her. Melissa is timely, thorough and knows how to spend her time wisely with our daughter. Our child is in 4th grade and is struggling with some math and English concepts. We find Melissa very knowledgeable, spot on, and so far we are pleased with her work. She also gives you feedback after each class which we found very useful. We are thinking about having Melissa come weekly on a regular basis. We would strongly recommend Melissa to any parent looking for a tutor with knowledge - she is after all a credentialed teacher - and since she is also teaching/substituting regularly, she has up to date experience on school subjects.
Melissa approached my son's lack of organization and study habits as though she knew what to do in two seconds. He know uses a timer to keep him on track and plan his subjects on typed paper to have him follow her suggested steps.
He is very eager to work and only says "hi Mom" when he comes in the door instead of wasting valuable time.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND THIS IS JUST THE FIRST SESSION.
Melissa has been tutoring my son for several months and I have been very pleased with her professionalism and tutoring techniques. Her method has increased his overall confidence. I have no hesitation recommending Melissa
Melissa is able to identify and approach my daughter at 4 to learn phonics through games and various different methods. Through these creative learning style, my daughter is able to learn quickly in a short period. We are satisfied with the course.
Melissa was great! She proofread my assignment in a short notice. Her feedbacks were very helpful. After revising what she told me to add or change, my paper was so much better. If it wasn't for Melissa, I don't think I would have gotten a good grade on the assignment. Thank you!! I'll be using your services again!
Melissa worked with my daughter over multiple sessions. She assessed her skill level in reading and grammar and created a plan to improve her performance. Melissa provided a good evaluation of where my daughter stands and suggested useful activities to continue her progress.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a teacher and a tutor, I have found that students sometimes have low confidence when it comes to reading. I firmly believe that every child can read, learn and progress academically at his or her own pace. Engaging students to read is something I am very familiar with. During free read in class, I rotate around the room and read with different students depending on their level. Their comprehension is usually pretty good but actually reading well is a skill that takes time. Segmenting, echo reading and using the CLOZE method are all strategies that work well in helping build a strong reader.
Study skills are a tool set I have developed continuously throughout the years as a student as well as a tutor/teacher. The tips I utilize are tailored to the students I am working with. Some of the study skills are mnemonic based meaning acronyms, acrostics, image name techniques, chaining (ordered and unordered lists) and rhyme keys are the essential building blocks of learning and retaining material.
Building vocabulary is a skill I use every day and one I share with my students. Not only knowing how to pronounce words but what their actual meaning is so crucial for students. I see so many students skip over words and take a guess at what they mean. My students don't finish the lesson until they have mastered not only language proficiency but vocabulary development.
