In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a K-6 Substitute Teacher for more than five years, I understand the subjects and students in the elementary school years. In addition, I have ten years experience tutoring students in that age bracket. My strength is adapting to student's needs. In English, reading, and writing, I find that selecting books and stories for their interests, increases their ability to connect with the material. Also, I enjoy working with the student to increase comprehension. I use tactile/kinesthetice activities: cut and paste, drawing, and I work with the students to create comics and poems about the characters and plot to make, and keep, learning fun and meaningful.
Other students may need learning tools or study skills to help them focus. I use rulers, pennies, toothpicks, and anything else to help students understand math concepts. I use color, and puzzles and games - for math, for geography, for English. In additon, I work with students to help them organize. If needed, I help them create folders, organize and separate papers and homework, and create a clock or calendar to help them understand time and due dates. It all helps them become independent and responsible.
For a retirement career, I went back to school to study Education to be able to fund world wide travel by teaching English. I had traveled extensively when I was young, but it was limited in my parenting years. In that pursuit, I attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) to complete ESL Education Program. I have done well in the program, earning a 3.85 GPA and an Preliminary Adult Teaching Credential. I completed all Level 1 requirements, and I will complete Level 2 requirements.
Currently I teach ESL and Business English at a private adult English Language school in Westwood, though in the past I have also taught other subjects. I taught a Computer Class for Older Adults as part of my teaching requirement, and I've done one-on-one tutoring in a number of different subject. For three years I taught an ESL Conversation Class in the Adult Literacy Program at the Los Angeles Public Library where I also tutored many students. I also taught an ESL Conversation for the Alhambra Unified School District, and in 2004, I taught a short-term EFL Class at Moscow State Forest University in Russia. As a tutor with Totally Tutored, I worked with two Engineers on assignment from Italy. I feel confident that I can help ESL students improve their speaking, written, comprehension, and verbal communication skills.
