About Jill

Hi I'm Jill! I have had more than 9 years of tutoring experience in addition to 8 years of teaching at the college and university level and I'm excited to work with you in a variety of subjects. I love explaining how math and science concepts work to a student and helping them understand the world around them. I also really enjoy test preparation tutoring and will help you learn the best way of cracking the test!

In addition to my extensive tutoring experience, I am a full-time faculty at a local community college.
I have a Master's degree in geology from Arizona State University (I lived in Arizona for 9 years before moving to LA in 2014) and a Bachelor's degree in both biology and geology from the University of Western Ontario. My tutoring experience is very diversified, and includes science, math, test preparation, and English. I am also very comfortable tutoring AP Environmental Science (not listed on the list of possible subjects!) My educational background has given me excellent language and grammar skills, as well as a strong foundation in math and science. I love being able to help a student understand a subject with which they have previously struggled. I have tutored students in most math and science courses, and I am comfortable with all grade levels, from elementary school to college. If you're curious about test scores, I received a 1490 (out of 1600) on the SAT 1, 760 on the SAT II Biology, and a 800 on both the SAT II Math and Writing subject tests.

I have also spent some time looking over the new SAT format and feel quite comfortable with the material. It is a different style of test than in previous years, but I'm excited to tutor it. These days so much seems to ride on a college acceptance, so let me help you work towards your dream school!

My teaching style varies according to the individual needs of the student. My main goal is to help the student become enthusiastic about the specific subject or activity, and confident in their ability to interpret what a question is actually asking. I am very flexible, and will tailor the curriculum and evaluation methods based on discussions with the student. If desired by either the student and/or parent, I can provide additional practice resources to help strengthen concepts covered in our tutoring sessions. Whenever possible, I am available to my students via email, text, or Skype if they have a problem with their homework that I can guide them through. I believe that not every student and tutor are compatible with each other, and I want to ensure the best fit possible. After the first couple sessions with a new student I always like to have a discussion with them (and their parents if necessary) about how things are going, and if we would both like to continue tutoring.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This semester I am only accepting new students for online tutoring, which is a perfect fit for a student looking for a somewhat flexible tutoring schedule.

If you need last minute help for a test or exam I will do my best to accommodate you, however please be aware that I may charge an increased rate for short-notice scheduling.

I think that tutoring can be a mutual rewarding experience, and I look forward to helping students excel!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Just like the SAT, the ACT is a test that requires a lot of preparation and students tend to be afraid of it. I'll go through each section with them and show them how to handle each type of problem so they are never faced with anything unexpected.

Biology

I've taken biology courses in a variety of different topics, ranging from environmental studies to genetics, with even my masters related to the field of geomicrobiology. I love helping students who are struggling understand the major concepts and being to develop an appreciation for the subject.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject that many students struggle with, and so I like to go back to the beginning and make sure the fundamentals are strong before progressing to more advanced material. I love showing students an easier way of viewing and doing a problem that they had previously had trouble with!

Ecology

Ecology is a hard subject for most teachers, which means a lot of students struggle. My educational background is interdisciplinary in several different natural sciences, meaning I have a deep understanding of this material. Additionally I have worked on environmental issues in the real world, and can impart that knowledge to help students with some of the application based free response questions.a

Geology

As my educational background shows, I have both a bachelors and a masters in geology. I am also currently teaching Physical and Historical Geology at a local community college. This is one of favorite subjects to tutor as the majority of students need help in the same course that I'm teaching.

Piano

I have been playing the piano since I was 4 years old, and I love this instrument. I was classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, and have passed my Grade 9 level examination. I have a very solid understanding of the musical theory associated with playing an instrument and I am able to incorporate that into my teaching. I have experience in teaching piano and I really enjoy being able to help students grow and learn to explore their musicality.

SAT Math

The SAT is a test that scares a lot of students, and for good reason! I break it down for my students on a section by section basis, and show them which areas to focus on for studying.
I make sure they are familiar with all types of problems and I also show them tricks for handling some of the more difficult problems.
