About Aaron

Guitar, banjo, bass, Portuguese, Spanish, English, music composition, theory, English composition and many more facets of language and music are the areas of teaching and passions of mine.

I love to teach people of all ages. I have been teaching guitar and language for more than 20 years. I enjoy seeing others learn to write and play music and to speak a new language. I am a singer/songwriter with expertise in folk, pop, flamenco, electric and Brazilian guitar styles. I have lived in Brazil for 2 years and speak fluent Portuguese. I teach Portuguese to students who love this beautiful language. I also teach the use of Portuguese in Brazilian music for students who want to sing Bossa Nova, samba, or other Brazilian styles.

My love of good playing and good writing accompanied by beautiful singing keeps me interested in sharing what I have learned. My goal is that the music is fun and that it is an intuitive and natural expression for the student. I make each lesson specifically suited to the individual as possible. I shape my teaching method around the objective of the student as I help them learn to express who they are. Songs are approached with the ear and with the hands with the goal of bringing about the 'soul', 'duende' or special 'feeling' of your style of music.

I have been writing songs since I was 10 years old, playing guitar since I was 12 and singing since, or before I could talk. I have written songs with hit songwriters and support myself with my writing and performing. I learned to play flamenco guitar by joining in the juergas and dance classes around NY city. I have studied classical and jazz guitar at university both at Berkeley School of Music, Cal State University, East Bay and the Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. All of these experiences make teaching others exciting as I discover what they are motivated to learn and help them reach their musical goals.

I have five internationally available and respected Instructional DVDs. Two are in flamenco guitar and three on Bossa Nova. I am excited to teach people both in person and around the world on DVD and Skype.

Everyone can benefit from adding music to their life!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am an advanced guitarist in many areas of music and love to share the enjoyment of the music and learning with my students.

I have taught people all around the world vis a vis my instructional DVDs in flamenco guitar. I also have many students who have graduated from very beginners with me to become intermediate and even advanced players on the guitar and in other fields such as songwriting.

I focus on the progress of the student toward their stated objectives as I encourage them to grow to develop their own musical voice. Each person will require an individualized approach and learning path while focusing on the techniques that allow them to create the music they want to hear.

Music Theory

Music theory is the most powerful tool for advancing many musical goals. Whether you are an instrumentalist, a composer, or an appreciator of music the structure of music known as music theory gives the student new tools for understanding and practice.

Music theory is the understanding of the building blocks of music. This study gives the student the skills to construct and use scales, chords, time signature, key signature and many fascinating aspects of compositional and musical organization. When it is most exciting and challenging music theory includes every aspect of the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic content of music study and practice.

I have been fascinated and in love with music theory since my earliest understanding of how two notes relate. I heard it first in recorder melodies when I was 5 years old playing the recorder with my sisters and parents and although I didn't understand it till much later the magic of relating two notes to each other enthralled me. Through my love of playing and learning music in rock guitar, Bossa Nova, jazz, country, the American song tradition and my own compositions I have enjoyed the magic of music theory. It has given me so much joy and new appreciation of the infinite field of music!

I have taught Portuguese to Americans and Brazilians in NY and Sao Paulo, Brazil. I have been teaching Portuguese for 14 years. Portuguese has many grammar rules that can be a challenge and I know how to make them intelligible and fun to learn. That is why I am known as the Portuguese Grammar Doc.

Manhattan's most inspiring Portuguese teacher is now available for private lessons in NY either in person or via web cam anytime.
The Portuguese Grammar Doc is known for bringing Beginners up to basic speech, Intermediates into greater fluency and failing students into improved grades. Students, aged 14 to adult, are being accepted for a limited time while the Doc has space in the calendar.

Students from universities in NY and Sao Paulo, BR and many ordinary New Yorkers have called in the Portuguese Grammar Doc to help their students and staff make significant progress fast! Teaching method and good preparation really matter! Positive encouragement to speak, demystifying jumble of grammar rules, accurate diagnosis of the student's weaknesses, and an ability to infuse students with confidence and style are hallmarks of the Portuguese Grammar Doc's method.

I have written songs for over 20 years and now am a performing singer/songwriter in the NY city area. I has toured extensively in the U.S. and in Europe with my band and as a solo artist.

A song I wrote with hit songwriter Alex Forbes was released on her album Leap. I have one CD out with my band the GilmartinPotter Band and am recording a second CD solo.

I am also an experienced arranger, and teacher of songwriting. I have taught songwriting privately for 15 years. This year I worked with the Resolve To Stop The Violence Project in the San Bruno jail in California teaching songwriting as part of their work with violent offenders. Giving healing through music is my highest goal and so the most fulfilling work for me comes from composing and recording for Songs of Love - an organization that creates personalized songs for severely ill children. I also write for Musical Prescriptions a company that works healing through music.

I also compose for film, solo artists, and for theatrical productions. I was commissioned by Lisa Peterson to compose the two and a half hour score for SueƱo a play adapted by Jose Rivera for the Manhattan Class Company and based on La Vida Es Sueno by Calerderon De La Barca. I received a Bachelors of Arts degree in classical guitar performance from California State University at Hayward, where I also won awards for my jazz performances and was granted two years study abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil. There I studied bossa nova, samba and vocal styling with Paulinho Nogeira. My solo repertoire encompasses music from the guitar traditions of classical, flamenco, Brazilian, and jazz. I work around the NY area as a singer/songwriter and playing as a sideman for songwriters in many styles. I work as a flamenco guitarist accompanying dance classes at Ballet Hispanico and Fazils Dance Studio. With Melania Levitsky I performed the music of Cuban poet and songwriter Silvio Rodrigues in a show titled Sueno con Serpientes.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing professionally for 15 years. I sing in English, Portuguese and Spanish regularly. I have good repertoire in all three languages and will probably appeal to those who want to learn to sing Bossa Nova, Bolero or Sones or want to study the American songbook or rock and roll singing.

great tutor

We just finished a lesson via Skype. Aaron arranged a day and time while he is traveling to keep us going on our lessons, which we really appreciate. The lesson went perfectly. While we are still challenged with pronunciation, Aaron is very encouraging. He works hard to figure out ways for us to get the sounds from tapping to movement. He has us mimic how his mouth moves and exaggerate the mo
