About Margarita

My name is Margarita and I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, CLS ASCP. I received my clinical training at Northridge Hospital Medical Center affiliated with CSUDH. I also earned a Bachelor's of Science in Biology with Honors from CSULA. I have worked with WyzAnt Inc. since 2008 and truly enjoy teaching and helping others develop skills they themselves can use to be successful. I have tutored students from elementary and middle school levels in subjects like math, science, and English. Additionally, I have worked with undergraduates and graduate students. I am a very friendly, but serious person when it comes to tutoring. I do my best to help students with a concept until they completely understand. I use strategies like having them teach me after they feel like they can grasp the concept. I use this method because I feel it gives the students more confidence. I also always go back to review all we have focused on to make sure they understand the lesson. Of course, when I suspect confusion I always ask if they need more explanation. I treat all students equally no matter the age. I know that some may have a harder time learning certain materials, but that should not get in their way of gaining knowledge. I believe in order for a student to learn something they must have some interest in the topic. There is always a fun approach to learning and I think I can not only help a student learn, but I can help them enjoy what they are learning at the same time. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In the past I have tutored two 6th graders in subjects like general Math, Science, and English. I try to mentor students toward gaining a good understanding of all subjects they may have difficulty with. Three things are needed to succeed in learning. Patience is one skill we must obtain before learning a challenging concept. Determination is another very important tool we need to use in order to reach success. The last thing we need to accomplish our goals is hard work. As long as we do our best we can accomplish anything.

General Computer

I have more than 10 years of computer experience. I have already passed the Microsoft and Excel tests and am looking forward to being given the opportunity to assist people with general needs of computers. Over the years handling computers has become common knowledge. I believe computers are less complicated than people assume. It just takes time to get to know ones system and that I am willing to help with for each student.

Genetics

I completed a Genetics course at Cal State, Los Angeles, last December 2009. I'm currently involved in research studies investigating gene expression of ID1 and ID2. These genes have been implicated with some cancers and we are studying its regulation and dysregulation during cell differentiation. I am also currently taking a Cell Biology course that covers the detail aspects of DNA. I am also very familiar and work well with punnet squares, monohybrid, and dihybrids problems.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken over a hand full of upper division organic chemistry series courses at Cal State LA earning all A's in the lectures and B's in the laboratory courses. I am confident I can help any student struggling in organic chemistry grasp a better understanding of concepts. Organic chemistry is one of the subjects I enjoyed studying in undergrad.

Study Skills

I was a college peer counselor a few years back and to this day, as a college student, I preach that study skills and time management are important skills a student should have to be successful in both education and life. Some approaches to studying include: flashcards, reading, note-taking, writing out, reciting, teaching to another person, etc. Although there are numerous ways a person could study everyone has their own approach that works best for them. The important thing is to try the different types to see which way works best for that student. Today as a tutor I encourage my students to adapt to study skills that they find are most helpful to them.

Very clear, very patient - excellent tutor!

Margarita helped my daughter for about two months prior to the end of the school year to help with prep for finals. She was excellent! My daughter learned so much in a very short period. Margarita was just fantastic: very clear in presentation of ideas, very patient, very personable. Always a very welcome presence in the house. This was my first time using a tutor and Margarita has now set th
