About Robert

Science, engineering and mathematics are fun to learn. This belief is from my experience in engineering, science, management, business and music. My background in Civil Engineering (BS, Santa Clara University), Engineering Sciences and Physical Sciences (MSE, Purdue University and PhD, UC Berkeley), gave me the opportunity to teach engineers at night classes,and present and publish over 100 technical papers.

I was awarded an outstanding teaching award from the College for teaching graduate engineers mathematics, physics and engineering.

The understanding of mathematics and physics enriches our lives in very practical ways. Mathematics and physics can be demonstrated with simple models. It is done with an equation and a picture depicting parts of the equation. An example is the derivative.

Mathematics is extremely useful. The rectangular cartesian coordinates are found in our every day life: home building, measurements of lumber, automobile speed and acceleration.

My tutoring approach is to use an equation and a picture to demonstrate the relationship.

Finally, this tutoring approach applies to all subjects and age groups.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Mathematics is fun. It is useful and will prepare you for the future in science, business and everyday life. Learn to enjoy and use what you learn in every day life.

Mathematics will prepare you for life. Algebra is a large stepping stone to other subjects and is a foundation for more other theories.

Business

I worked as a group supervisor, department manager, director, and chief scientist at Lockheed in Sunnyvale, Ca.

After retirement, I was president of a research company outside of Boston.

I am now president of my own company, Au & Associates, Inc. My specialty is accounting and new businesses, such as music opportunities.

Civil Engineering

I have a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Santa Clara University. I have worked in the Engineering Department of the City of San Jose, California. My job was Design Engineer for the storm sewers in San Jose. I was responsible for determining the size and slope of the storm sewer for the entire city and annexed regions.

Differential Equations

I have used ordinary and partial differential equations to solve engineering problems. This equation relates a function with its derivative(s). It can represent physical properties as a function of time As an example, a differential equation can be used to describe the velocity of a ball falling through the air considering gravity and air resistance. My background in Civil Engineering (BS, Santa Clara University), Engineering Sciences and Physical Sciences (MSE, Purdue University and PhD, UC Berkeley), gave me the opportunity to teach engineers at night classes

Geometry

I am an aeronautical engineer with a PhD from UC Berkeley. Design of missiles employ many shapes such as cylinders, spheres, and flat surfaces. Geometry allows you to understand the pieces and how the pieces fit together.

Geometry is in our every day life. Look at the corner of your room where the walls meet the ceiling. You see an upside down rectangular cartesian coordinate. On the floor you can see a regular retangular cartesian coordinate. Not surprising because the carpenter built it that way.

I learned at Berkeley that you truly understand a theory if you can draw a picture of the theory and write a formula describing the picture. That is Geometry.

Golf

I can provide the basics of the grip, swing and putting.

Since I am a senior, My expertise can be applied to the 60 to 80 year seniors.

I have won several club golf tournaments and understand the process to win.

For couple golfers, I can provide the dos' and don'ts' of couples golf.

Guitar

I have taken guitar lessons for classical, folk and jazz for the last 9 years.

In the area of classical guitar, I have completed four years of classes from Mike Sult and other instructors at Foothill College.

In the area of folk guitar, I have taken four years of classes from Mike Sult at Foothill college.

I currently play the electric guitar in the DeAnza College Jazz Ensemble under John Russell.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University and a PhD in Engineering Science from UC Berkeley. My work experience has been in mechanical, physics and electrical applications for missiles. I performed and managed the research, development and testing of sea-launched missiles.

Microsoft Excel

Excel is a very powerful tool for mathematics, physics and accounting.

In mathematics and physics, the spreadsheet and the ability to write a formula in cells and connect them with cells in other rows and columns becomes a very powerful computational tool.

In small business accounting, the spreadsheet can display the expenses and sales for the period. Using the addition, subtraction and multiplication functions one can obtain the profit and loss statement.

QuickBooks

I use Quickbooks to prepare the Income Statement and Balance Sheet for my business clients. This requires recording the income and expenses to determine the profit or loss for the period. The Balance Sheet is used to state the company's current assets, liabilities and equity distribution for the period.

Saxophone

Play tenor saxophone and guitar in a Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Groups for 4 years. Performed in 4 concerts each year. Almost finished with my course work for an AA in music at De Anza College.

Tax Preparation

I am an Enrolled Agent, enrolled to practice before the IRS. I have prepared tax returns for CPAs, other Enrolled Agents and for my company.

Tennis

I was on the tennis team at Santa Clara University and the 2d Army team. I played and ranked in Northern California. I am a former member of the Foothill Swim and Tennis Club, and currently a member of the Los Altos Tennis Group. I have extensive experience in singles and doubles.

Trigonometry

I am an engineer and understand the importance of Trigonometry in performing engineering work. Trigonometry is needed for you to have a good understanding of mathematics. It is the foundation for future mathematics.
