A love of nature and the need to be in open natural environments is a consistent part of my life. When I take surveys to hone in on my own personal learning style in regards to Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, the naturalist always edges out the visual intelligence as my predominate strength. During my eight years of experience as an elementary art teacher, I have used animals, nature, and artists involved in nature, as a component of many of my lessons.
As a tutor, I have two major strengths to offer from a content point of view. My Art Education training and classroom experience gives me a solid foundation in Art Theory, Art History, and how to break things down and build in success for my students. My lifelong passion for photography and experience with both the film and digital aspects of the media, give me a strong background in both the core aesthetic of photography and the ability to teach how to achieve success in a wide range of the processes involved.
Philosophically, I believe students learn best when engaged in tasks that they’re interested in, or find useful. I would find the time to learn about my student’s interests and aptitudes and work to connect the learning process to their lives. Creativity and independence are two of the things I try to encourage in my students, and I will adapt my approach to what they need the most--assigned tasks, collaboration, direct help, and/or feedback. Lastly, I’d like to say that I believe good teachers are self-reflective at all times, and learn from their students how to improve themselves. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a M.A.T. in visual art from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. My teaching experience includes eight years as an elementary art teacher. I would be happy to provide access to letters of recommendation and teaching portfolio examples.
Photography continues to be a passion of mine after 30 years. I've photographed a wide range of subject matter, including sports, nature, events, fine arts and children's portraiture. In 1999, I received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Rhode Island. I earned a M.A.T. in Visual Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 and became an art teacher. I have more than 8 years of experience teaching elementary level art including enrichment programs in photography. I'm now pursuing a career in photography with an emphasis on fine art and portraiture. I made the move to digital photography 10 years ago, so I am proficient in DSLR cameras and Photoshop. I also have a wealth of previous experience in black and white and color film-based photography. I work hard to break things down clearly and empower students to use photography to capture or create what they find exciting. My role is that of a knowledgeable collaborator, there to guide you to where you want to go, and to show you the technical and artistic possibilities that photography offers.
