I have worked for more than 20 years teaching Adult ESL for the Beverly Hills Adult School Division. I am a young retiree from Los Angeles Unified Schools, where I taught for 34 years. I was a classroom teacher for 9 years, and I have had much experience with gifted/high achievers in grades 4-6. I also taught grades 2-3. I had 13 years experience with Special Ed, and evaluated and wrote IEP's for Physically Handicapped children who were mainstreamed to regular classrooms. In my last 13 years with LAUSD, I used my Masters Degree and Counseling Credential in my work with attendance and truancy problems for LAUSD. My extensive experience teaching Adult ESL includes having taught from 1989 to 2011 for the Beverly Hills School District where I also mentored teachers who were learning ESL skills. I have strong references to support my quality work history and experience.
I am patient and humorous, and I approach my students on their level. All of my evaluations by the school districts I served were outstanding, and I was on a team for LAUSD that evaluated teachers and their classrooms for the Board of Education.
During the 1980's I served on the State Education Commission's team to evaluate Social Studies textbooks for classroom adoption. Helene covered English and Math with my daughter. She provided a great variety of material including work books and novels which were ideal for my child's needs. I found her to be very encouraging and patient in her approach. I really liked her manner in explaining things and she made it easy for my daughter to understand.
She carefully explained and reviewed mathematical concepts which had been difficult to grasp previously. She avoided placing unnecessary pressure by empowering my child to decide how much homework she felt comfortable completing. Her friendly disposition made educating my child both enjoyable and fun. I would highly recommend Helene.
I am thrilled to be in such capable and experienced hands. Helene knew right away what my needs were and we went straight to the areas where I need the most help. She is patient, yet assertive enough to keep the pressure on. This is exactly what I need in a tutor. Looking forward to our next meeting.
Helene has great insight re: ESL and the ways in which to implement structures which empower those who are concerned how their writing and speech is perceived by others. Very patient yet firm in her directions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked in Special Education for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and evaluated and wrote IEPs for Dyslexic children from 1981-1995. I also tutored children with dyslexia and other special needs so that they could be mainstreamed into regular classrooms. I administered the Woodcock Assessment Tests to properly assess students needs, and both their strengths and weaknesses. I served students from grades 1-12 during that time.
I hold a Life K-9 Standard Elementary credential issued in California in 1971. I taught in Los Angeles Unified Schools grades k-9 from 1972 - 1989.
I have over 20 years experience in teaching ESL, having worked from 1989 - 2011 for the Beverly Hills School District teaching Adult ESL. I have also taught all grade levels from K - 10th grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I possess two teaching credentials from California, and have a Master's Degree from UCLA in English Literature. My minor is in Art History. I have a Pupil Personnel Services Credential as well.
I have over 35 years experience in the classroom in California public schools. During that time, I taught every grade, from K-10, and had to help students organize and prioritize their time so that their assignments could be completed, both in the classroom and as homework. My grades of specialty were 4-6,so I have much experience with children who are just coming into the age of some independence of choice and responsibility for structuring their own time. I had to show them how to put assignments in order of priority, how to concentrate and focus their attention, the difference between reading for main ideas and speed vs. reading for deeper comprehension. I taught them how to make outlines, skim written passages for main ideas, and compose succinct answers to make best use of time. I believe I am well suited and have sufficient background to teach study skills.
