I hold a M.S. in Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island and a B.S. in Physics (with a minor in Geology and additional extensive coursework in English) from University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In college, I took a part-time job as a tutor for a local organization that provided a self-directed learning alternative to high school. There, I discovered that I loved the challenge of finding new ways to present information so that it's understandable and exciting for each individual. While there, I provided personalized lesson plans for teenagers in physics, chemistry, computer programming, and math. After leaving the job to focus on my own coursework, one family requested that I continue working with their son, since I was able to connect with him where others were not.

When I entered grad school, I sought out more opportunities to continue teaching. As a teaching assistant for 1.5 years, I organized individual and group study sessions for a variety of science courses, focusing on the ocean & atmosphere, and the geological, physical, and biological processes within them. I independently delivered two 75 minute long lectures on these topics, answered questions, and provided step by step homework help when needed.

Finally, I've also successfully taught younger students (8-14) basic physical and environmental science while working as an outreach scientist. For this position I led field trip and summer camp programs on the Rhode Island coast, including one workshop for 3rd graders that was praised as the students' favorite out of their week-long program.

One of my favorite parts of working with new students is talking together to figure out what learning style works best for them! I am personally a very visual learner and love making diagrams and models to clarify ideas. While I think I would be a great match for other visual learners who may be frustrated with their teachers or textbooks for failing to provide for them, I'm also experienced in creatively adapting to my students' varied strengths and weakn

I completed a Master's thesis in which I analyzed 60,000+ data points containing 10+ variables using MATLAB. I completed both undergraduate and graduate courses on programming with MATLAB, and have also used it for class projects in Oceanography and Physics. I'm experienced in manipulating and visualizing datasets using MATLAB's unique capabilities and can help students who are new to programming or just new to MATLAB.

Very knowledgable and helpful

Emma taught me how to understand what I was doing rather than just telling me what to do. I would highly recommend her for anybody who needs physics or matlab help!

Great tutor

My daughter loved working with Emma. She explained things and gave her strategies to help her understand the math concepts they were working on. She was excellent with communicating with me. I recommend her.
