I was the first young adult in my immediate family, and one of the first in my extended family, to attend a four-year university. I was offered admission to each university to which I applied, having completed several Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and having earned one of the highest grade point averages (GPA) in my class. Many of my classmates also secured admission to the most selective universities in the state and in the nation.

Both in high school and at university, I often received requests from classmates for assistance in preparing for exams. What I think they saw in me was kindness, patience, and confidence in my abilities. I always enjoyed studying with friends, and to share my knowledge and skills gave me an added boost of confidence. I also took advantage of opportunities to learn from mentors, teachers, and professors. One of my favorite professors taught Quantum Chemistry, and was as patient as she was brilliant. The subject was very challenging, and I often sought guidance from her with challenging course material. I have kept in touch with her in recent years, and I was delighted to learn recently that she has been appointed to a position of leadership at my former university. I found inspiration in people such as her.

During my graduate studies, I gained experience as a teaching assistant in an introductory course in Materials Science. Around this time, my first tutoring work was a few math sessions with a high school student who was referred to me. I have recently returned to tutoring, and I have enjoyed the challenges and rewards.

Spanish

Spanish

My academic major at university was Chemistry/Materials Science, and I also played cello in the orchestra. I have kept an intermediate level fluency in Spanish through conversation with friends, travel, Spanish language television and radio, reading, and through practice with interactive language tools. I love learning new languages, and I can offer helpful suggestions for retention and confidence in Spanish.

During my graduate studies in Materials Science & Engineering, I was a teaching assistant for the introductory Materials Science course. Materials Science is a field of study which focuses on chemistry and physics of a broad range of materials used in engineering, such as polymers, metals, and semiconductors. My thesis work involved polymers which display electrical conductivity and electro-chromism, changing color in response to an electrical stimulus.

Derald was a huge help to my college son

Derald was available on same day notice to help my college son go through his quantum chemistry homework that was giving him fits. Derald did a great job acting as a sounding board to help my son out and give him the assurance he was using the correct approach.

Thankful for Mr. Derald!

Derald has been instrumental in boosting my son’s confidence. My son enjoys working with Derald as he is patient and very knowledgeable. My son was holding onto a D in the class, but earned a B on his last chemistry quiz and a B on his last lab thanks to the extra practice with Derald. We are so appreciative of him!

Chemistry

He really can relate with my daughter on the struggles during COVID & combo Online learning/in school experience. He has helped her through her Chem questions. Thank you!

Good job

Derald is very patient with my son. My son seems more interested now in the last 3 weeks; then he was a month ago. We have a long journey ahead; but some progress is being made.
