SUNY at Stony Brook (Anthropology)
I have always had a lifelong passion for learning. School was a place in which I excelled, but I felt like it was a cold place, one that values results of standardized tests rather than the enjoyment of the acquisition of knowledge. I graduated in the top 10% in my high school, I was an Honor's Student at Stony brook University where I graduated magna cum laude, and I continue my quest for understanding the world around me every day, from reading textbooks in my spare time to listening to lectures.
This kind of energy and voracity for learning is sapped from students in schools that don't cater to the needs of each individual student, preferring to see them as a number, a statistic. I want to be able to encourage students to think about problems in different creative ways, to see how interesting learning about the world really can be, from History of all that has happened before, to the language of the universe in mathematics. I am equipped with a TESOL/TEFL/TESL certificate, but I am able to tutor more than English as a Second Language. I took math classes for fun in college, including calculus and linear algebra, I am excellent with English grammar and language, and any era in history can be explored and made interesting with the right attitude.
I am really enthusiastic about mathematics. I took classes for fun, not because I had to for my major, and I am a highly logical thinker. Mathematics amazes me in its ability to be able to predict natural phenomena around us, like a code to the universe. I can explain mathematics in a way that makes it accessible, interesting, and fun!
I am also certified to teach English as a foreign language, to non-native speakers. I am precise with grammar and I am familiar with the rules of the English language so I am more than happy to help anyone with difficulties in grammar, reading, punctuation, inflections, or comprehension.
If you want a tutor who is encouraging, enthusiastic, and energetic about the process of learning, let me know. I am available every week day all day, except for Monday and Wednesday from 6pm onward. Hope to hear from you! I have always had a lifelong passion for learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I excelled at mathematics growing up. I studied up to linear Algebra in university. I have a highly logical mind and an innate ability to work with and understand numbers. Having studied humanities primarily, I am incredibly familiar with the trepidation most non-scientifically minded students encounter. I would be able to explain math and garner interest in the subject from a variety of perspectives.
I am very familiar with the different types of equations one deals with in algebra 2. I have internalized the rules for dealing with logarithms, exponents, variables, and fractions. I received an A in this class when I was in high school. I would be able to teach the material patiently, effectively, and enthusiastically.
I am TESOL/TEFL/TESL/ESL certified by Oxford Seminars. I partook in a 100 hour course that covered everything from classroom management, to different methods of teaching students who speak a different language. I am a native English and Russian speaker, with experience in 3 other languages, including French, Italian, and Latin. I am well versed in grammar as well.
