About Anthony

Anthony is a composer, guitarist, and technologist based in Southern California. Through his compositions, Anthony explores questions relating to gesture, modularity, and metaphorical representation. Over his career as a composer, Anthony has developed a voice that focuses on both intricate systems and improvisatory practices. Combining the sound worlds of both acoustic and electronic instruments in his compositions, Anthony invents ideas to resonate with audiences of all types. His pieces have been performed internationally, with premieres in the United States, Italy, The Netherlands, and Spain. Anthony’s most recent works include a feature length film score for the documentary, Nine-Story Mountain.

Along with composing, Anthony is a frequent performer of both written and improvised music. He is a versatile guitarist who has years of experience in solo, chamber, and orchestral contexts. In his early years, Anthony performed primarily in local bands of varying musical genre, from rock/metal, to Irish folk/pop, to ambient, to jazz. In the last few years, he has spent time exploring chamber, free improvised, and jazz contexts. Beyond this, Anthony is a frequent pit orchestra musician in the Los Angeles area. Anthony studied classical guitar with Professor Javier Calderon and jazz performance with Professor Kei Akagi.

As a technologist, Anthony explores various modes of expression through the use of interactive computer systems for improvisation. Recently, Anthony has begun working on an algorithm for a autonomous computer improvisor whose basic method of understanding music is gestural. This computer performer has had multiple performances, most notably in Anthony’s MFA thesis recital, E-Motions (what about gesture?).

Anthony completed his M.F.A. in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology at the University of California – Irvine, where he studied with with Christopher Dobrian, Nicole Mitchell, Lukas Ligeti, Kojiro Umezaki, and Michael Dessen. Prior to his masters studies, Anthony received his Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he studied with Professors Stephen Dembski and Laura Schwendinger.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a master's degree in music composition and have worked professionally as a composer for the past ten years. I have also taught group composition classes as well as given private lessons.

Ear Training

As a jazz musician and improviser, ear training is crucial to my own musical practices. It is something that I am constantly working to improve and build on. I would love to work with students on developing their own musical ears.

General Music

I have been a music teacher, teaching guitar, composition, music history, music technology, and other musical topics for the past nine years.

Guitar

I studied classical and jazz guitar during both my undergraduate as well as my graduate studies. I have also been playing guitar for the past fifteen years. From 2008-2014, I taught private guitar lessons, and group guitar classes at a music academy in Verona, Wisconsin.

Music History

I have studied music history extensively, focusing on medieval European music, American Black music, and 20th century concert music. During my undergraduate studies, I took several graduate level music history seminars. For my master's I worked on several research projects, focusing on the history of American Black improvised music.

Music Production

A large portion of my master's work involved music production and technology. While at UC, Irvine, I worked as an audio engineer for two campus recording studios as well as for one of the theaters. I ran live audio for many of the campus concerts, including guest rock, hip-hop, and experimental bands.

Music Theory

As a composer, I have studied music history extensively, focusing heavily on post-tonal and jazz theories. Music theory is an aspect of music that I work to incorporate into many of my guitar and composition lessons. I have also had a few students take on music theory as their primary subject.

Songwriting

As a composer, songwriting is incredibly important to my own practice. In the past I have had great experience giving song writing lessons to private students. We would work through multiple styles, including acoustic based music and more electronic idioms.
