About Dr Sabri

The middle of five children, Sabri B. was born in 1956 in the town of Fayoum, Egypt, where he attended law school at Cairo University. He then left Egypt for the United Kingdom. He was invited by Oxford University, where he spent some time, and never returned to Egypt. A few years later, after living and working in England, Italy, France, and Cyprus, he took refuge in the country he loved most, the United States.

In California he studied communications at California State University, Fullerton, then obtained a master’s degree there in English education. Later he worked at many colleges and universities teaching English as a second language, freshman English, journalism, and educational technology. He did further graduate work at UCLA and obtained a PhD in education and distance learning from Capella University. Dr. B. is a well established author.

Dr. B. is a creative Educator, Inspiring Lecturer and Qualified Professor with a Doctorate Degree coupled with 35 years experience instructing college students, securing resources, and implementing effective programs. Background includes law and journalism. Specializations include: English as a Second Language (ESL), College English, Journalism and Instructional Technology.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I can only tutor for the English section of this test. I do not have qualification to tutor Math or Science. I have extensive experience in teaching English reading, writing, grammar, and syntax. To reiterate, I am qualified to tutor candidates in English only.

Arabic

First, I am a native of Egypt and Arabic is my mother tongue. I have a law degree from Cairo University; this implies strength in the language. I have taught Arabic to US government officials through Berlitz school of languages. I had worked as a journalist for the Arab Press in association with the French Press Agency.

English

I have been an English and ESL professor for 35 years. I have worked at many colleges and universities in both Southern California and Northern California. I have taught Freshman English many semesters during my tenure. My educational background allowed me to have FSA in several areas including English; additionally, I am a writer and a novelist. I have published several English textbooks. Surely, I am qualified to teach and tutor English.

ESL/ESOL

I have been an ESL professor for more than 35 years. I have taught at many colleges and universities in California. Besides my degree in TESOL, I have a wide experience with various cultures and languages; additionally, English is my third language, and that gives me an advantage in understanding individual learner's needs. I am also familiar with the areas with which ESL/EFL learners may have difficulties. I have published several academic texts on ESL grammar and writing.

Grammar

I have been considered the Resident Grammar Expert at SJCC for 12 years. I have taught English grammar to both students and teachers for 35 years. I have three published books on grammar use. Being a non-native speaker, and learning English as a third language give me the advantage of understanding why we do the things we do in English in comparison to other languages with which I am familiar. I have a passion for English grammar and that helps me to be an effective instructor.

TOEFL

Having been an English and ESL professor for 35 years, and that English is my third language, I have an advantage; I understand the areas of difficulties that ESL/EFL learners find in the language, and I know how to explain them from a non-native point of view. Additionally, I have tutored many TOEFL candidates through two courses I wrote and currently teach online.

Writing

I have always had a passion for writing. In addition to teaching freshman English, I write textbooks and fiction. Although English is my third language, I have been able to master it and become an English and Journalism professor, even a published author. I have taught for 35 years at many colleges and universities. I have helped many graduate students with their dissertations. In short, academic writing is one of my strong areas of expertise because of my vast experiences with other languages and cultures.
