About Thomas

My name is Thomas, but most of my students call me TJ. I am an experienced tutor (400+ hours), well used to one on one sessions. I work with elementary, high school, and adult clients on how to better speak and write in the English language. I am serious about writing, but have a relaxed and sometimes funny method of teaching.

I have written and taught college curriculum. I can help with essays, letters and grant writing. I am as comfortable with academic writing as I am with prose and poetry. I like to use my knowledge of popular culture to reach the people I help tutor. I can explain theory through Breaking Bad, and I can help you write an essay on Game of Thrones. Let me know what you are writing and we will make it ring with clarity and fire.

That said, many students need help with APA or MLA formatting or technical writing. Though is will no doubt be less exciting, I am capable and happy to help with this too. Also, I do work with math and science common core K-6 and English/AP Language 7-12.

Please contact me to schedule.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have completed several undergraduate anthropology courses including Anthropology of Indigenous Americans, Anthropology of Sex and Gender, and Anthropology of Primates. This is a great subject that is complemented by my knowledge of Psychology and basic Sociology. All courses were completed at the California State University Fullerton.

Also, if you are a graduate student, I am familiar with APA formatting and can help with any stage of the drafting process.

Botany

I have completed two undergraduate level 4 unit courses on Botany at Santa Barbara City College. I learned the basics of plant life and anatomy from Professor Larry Freisen. I have spent time with microscope and in the garden with live plants. I can help explain the basics of plants to children and undergraduate college students. I have also taken Natural Science, Geology, and Zoology as an undergraduate at CSU Fullerton, which grants me insight into plant life in relation to climate and ecology.

English

I graduated with an MA and BA in English from a California State University, both with high honors. I have worked as a tutor for ESL and international students for two years and worked as an instructor of English 101 for CSU Fullerton.

Literature

From Shakespeare and Milton to Hemingway and David Foster Wallace, I am well versed in English and American Literature. I also have experience in Japanese and Latin American Literature from survey courses. If you need help with a class that involves a ton of reading, and more importantly, analyzing Literature in order to write an argumentative/research paper... I am the tutor for you.

Proofreading

Throughout my efforts to become a professional writer, I have undergone countless workshops with friends and associates. If there is one thing I am good at doing, it is revising a piece of writing line by line. That said, I do not consider myself an editor. I am a tutor who attempts to conduct "proofreading" alongside the writer. I do not want to correct your writing, but help you find the words you need.

Public Speaking

I have taken only two semesters of public speaking as an undergraduate, but have had experience delivering conference papers. Also, I was a finalist in the 2011 National Speech and Debate Association (Sierra Regional), while delivering my first public speech. The experience showed me my natural gift with speaking. I can most definitely help you write, rehearse and master your speech, should you need to write one.

Writing

Though I have only worked a few small paid jobs as a writer, I consider myself an up and coming author considering my recent successes in several quarterly magazines. My most recent publication can be found on NAILED magazine's website, a short essay that describes the morbid irony of combat.

Cooperative and patient — Thomas is an amazing tutor! I was struggling to organize my ideas for an essay that required the use of codes and modes. He was able to guide me through it as we worked together to expand the length of what I had completed so far. Thanks to him, I began to generate various ideas. He's incredibly helpful! ...
