I am an educator by choice. Those who can do teach! Teaching is a special skill that allows me to help a young person expand their horizon. It is not merely setting one up for regurgitation of material, but internalizing the learning experience to make it personal, interesting, and a basis for growth and recall when necessary. I have seen too many students with assignments consisting of tens of problems to solve, but have received no formal instruction to help them obtain the answers. This is not teaching! I am of the old school: teach the concept, demonstrate it, and give the child guided practice before sending them on their way with an assignment to practice mastery.
I have twenty years experience educating students in the classroom and tutoring small groups as well as one on one. As a trained educator I am experienced in working with Special Needs children, too. Education is a personal passion of mine. My motto is "Education is the key to success". I've learned that education is my gift and I work well with children understanding that not all children fit into a predetermined modality of learning. It is often necessary to adapt to a child's way of learning to help them grasp the concept. Tutoring provides an opportunity for a student to grasp that concept that floated over their head in class and they were too nervous to ask for an explanation for whatever reason. There is nothing more magical than having a student grasp those concepts and come back to let you know that they are passing that class or at least understanding what is being taught!
I have always been interested in math and science. I like working with numbers and manipulating formulas. I understand the need to know the basics before moving to the next level and have the skills to help you get those missing skills as well as work with you on keeping up with your current lessons.
If you are looking for someone willing to take the time to ensure that you are getting what you need to do well in school, then I am your person. I am an educator by choice. Those who can do teach! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having worked with Common Core since its inception into the educational system, I am familiar with the different levels within the different subjects that it addresses. I have tutored K-12 students using the system. After an initial test, we used the CCS to identify the areas in which a student needed to focus and create a plan of study.
I have tutored K-12 for the past 12 years. I am very well versed in all elementary subjects. I am capable of providing remedial as well as enriched help in addition to tutoring grade level. I also have classroom experience as a teacher; I worked in the public school system for 10 years. Having scored 100% in the majority of your elementary tests and having passed all of them should be representative of my ability to tutor at this level.
I know the phonics and therefore can teach them. I have utilized HOP to help children learn to read--starting with my own son who is now 23 and we only used 40% of the program. I have since been tutoring and teaching young children not only phonics, but techniques of syllabication to grow their vocabulary.
