About Alan

I'm a Cal State Long Beach lecturer in creative writing and literature, award-winning author, longtime proofreader/copy editor for magazines and advertising firms, and father of three kids in Long Beach schools. In my ten-plus years teaching English at the university level (and substitute teaching at all grade levels), I've learned that every student can begin to enjoy reading and writing, and every writer who tries is one draft away from a top grade. My background as a widely published author specializing in popular essays and personal nonfiction makes me an especially good fit for students trying to write standout college admission and Common App essays. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing writers progress and succeed.

I cover all the nuts and bolts of reading, comprehension and essay preparation, but also demonstrate the fun of line-by-line improvements, asking questions to unearth the student's original insights, details and descriptions--thoughts that sometimes struggle to make it onto the blank page.

As a professional proofreader, I guarantee not only that students' homework will be grammatically perfect, but also that they'll break through to understand how to edit and make those corrections themselves.

This is a highlight from a recent classroom evaluation at CSULB:

"Professor R. is an astounding professor who pushes his students to think creatively while developing an effective piece of work."

We can meet at my home, my Cal State office (or the library there), or almost anyplace convenient for you that's close to Long Beach. I understand the complications of family life and can offer make-up appointments with same-day notice in case of cancellations.

I was a finalist for both the Southern California Booksellers Award in Fiction and the PEN Center-USA Award in Journalism.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Reading

I have taught writing, literature and journalism continuously at the college level for the past ten years, as well as substitute teaching at all grade levels for public schools. In addition, I have three decades of experience as a professional proofreader and copy editor for periodicals, books and advertisers.

I have been a finalist for both the PEN Center-USA Award in Journalism and the Southern California Booksellers Award in Fiction, and my first book appeared in the Los Angeles Times Book Review's 2004 roundup of best books on Southern California.
