Hi! My name is Liz Y. and I have had twelve years of experience in California's secondary schools teaching French for all levels and English for Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors. I also taught dance for five years. I attended Columbia University's Teacher's College and in 1987 received a Master's Degree in Social Sciences-International Education.
I have been a musician and performer since high school, performing in clubs and for casuals, singing and playing guitar and/or piano. In 1988, I began songwriting. I had my first original music CD which came out five years ago. I am currently working on my second original music CD.
I have tutoring experience through Renee's Tutoring Service in Long Beach. I enjoy working with people of all ages. I have been teaching Pilates and Gyrotonic for the last nine years. I also taught Yoga for two years in my home and subbed at several local gyms for yoga classes.
I love to meet new people and I can help you learn and progress in the following fields: English, reading and writing and American Literature, French- all levels, beginning guitar and classical, pop or jazz piano, and basic songwriting skills.

Elizabeth did a great job of helping my daughter brush up her French grammar and vocabulary and was especially good at helping her with her accent and pronunciation. Thank you so much, Elizabeth!
Elizabeth was really helpful. She made it very easy to understand my book. Since I always had a male teacher at high school for American lit , having Elizabeth was very relaxing.
Today was our first lesson. We started with vowel sounds and correct pronunciation. It is going to be a long process!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I tutored my son extensively in U.S. History when he was in Opportunities for Learning, a Charter School. I also learned a lot about American History while working on a curriculum that focused on U.S. History from the time of the creation of the Statue of Liberty up to the 1990's.
For three years. when my son was in elementary school I presented an "American Heritage in Song" program, which chronicled the music and history from early colonial times up through the jazz age.
At Renee's Tutoring in Long Beach, I tutored a student in AP American History.
I have a minor in English and have 6 years of teaching experience at both Whitney High School and Artesia High in the ABC Unified School District. Whitney is one of the highest ranked schools in the state of California. I taught Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors English.
I am a certified Pilates and Gyrotonic instructor. I have been teaching for nine years. I also majored in Dance at Cal-State University Long Beach and taught dance at Whitney High School for five years.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in French from Cal-State University, Fullerton. I've taught all levels of French at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills, and Whitney High School in Cerritos. Whitney is top-rated with Lowell as one of the two best schools in California. I've traveled to France several times.
I taught high school English for 8 years. During that time, I covered many lessons in grammar. I also learned extensively about grammar through my upper division French courses, and by taking a novel writing class at Long Beach City College. There were a number of professional writers in that class and boy did they know their grammar!
I have been playing guitar since the age of 12. I've taken classical guitar, and jazz guitar from Carl Verheyen. I can play different styles, folk, pop, jazz.
I've also accompanied myself for many years on guitar, playing in clubs and casuals.
When I taught high school English at Whitney and Artesia High Schools we would always have literature selections for each level. Usually, there would be four or five novels covered per year and we would read short stories,poems and essays. In sophomore year, it was more World Literature and for juniors it was American Literature.
I took classical piano from the age of 5-10 and continued throughout high school. I also studied pop and jazz piano from Brian Barham for 5 years, as well as four years with Peter Siebert in Orange County. I am a songwriter and have been performing for over 25 years accompanying myself on piano and guitar. I've also studied voice with Terri Weiss.
I proofread hundreds of essays for grades 7-12 in English classes, and also co-wrote and wrote curricula which had to be proofread.
Understanding grammar and syntax as I do, from the study of English and French helps. I took a novel writing class at Long Beach City College and most of the people in the class were professional writers. We proofread each other's chapters.
In my eight years of teaching English at Whitney and Artesia High Schools, I taught many aspects of reading. Students read novels, short stories, and poems. They did comprehension questions, as well as essays on such topics as theme, plot, characterization, etc.
There was a wide array of ability levels when it came to reading, as far as fluency, speed and comprehension went. In dealing with problems, oftentimes it would become clear that the novel or piece of literature was too advanced for the student's level or they had trouble relating to it, due to the language or vocabulary. The challenge of the tutor or teacher is to bridge that gap and to find relevancy for the students.
I have eight years of experience teaching English at Whitney High and Artesia High. At Artesia I taught Juniors and Seniors, many of whom were preparing for college. I also taught an honors class.
At Whitney, it was a college-prep school, one of the highest ranked in California and most students were planning on attending four-year universities. We did a lot of essay writing and creative writing. Also intense work on grammar and syntax.
I went to Columbia University for my Master's. I completed many academic papers and know what's needed.
I enjoy helping students excel and succeed.
I taught Senior's English at a High School in Lakewood and an honors class at the Junior level at a High School in Cerritos. Many of the students were college bound and we did sophisticated writing assignments dealing with analysis of literature and all manner of essay writing, as well as creative writing of narrative essays and poems, etc.
I taught grammar and vocabulary also.
I began songwriting in 1990. I studied songwriting with Robin Randall, who currently teaches at Musicians Institute. I have attended numerous songwriting workshops and critiques and am a member of the "Songwriter's Guild" and "Songs Alive". I have one original music CD and am currently recording my 2nd original CD.
When I taught English for eight years at Whitney and Artesia High Schools in the ABC Unified School District, I would always start the week with 10 Vocabulary words. We would have quizzes and tests. These would include writing definitions, or synonyms for a word or creating a sentence and using the word in context.
Starting in college, I kept a personal journal of vocabulary and when I came across words I didn't know, I'd add them into my journal. It really expanded my vocabulary.
I have been singing professionally since the age of 21. I began performing for assemblies in high school and with the school chorus, and began my professional jobs in college. I have taken voice from two voice teachers--April Thronson and Terri Weiss. April is in Newport Beach, and Terri Weiss works in the entertainment capital around Hollywood and the valley. I've performed pop, blues, folk, country and jazz standards. I am also a songwriter and have performed my music in clubs and at conferences.
Having taught English for eight years at Whitney and Artesia High schools in California I taught many aspects of writing. For creative short story writing, we worked on effective description, narration and dialogue. In essay writing, we covered such topics as expository, persuasive and narrative essays. Students also worked on poetry writing.
I have authored several curricula. One is a supplementary curriculum for a non-profit organization, "The Statue of Peace Foundation" for English and Social Studies teachers. I also worked on curriculum in the Fine Arts for ABC Unified School District.
I have been practicing yoga for 15 years. I taught yoga in my home for two years and subbed at several local fitness studios, "The Belmont Club" in Long Beach, and "Frog's Club One" in Long Beach.
