About Rachel

I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I can help you with most levels of math. I have taken quite a few education courses and have spent plenty of time in middle school and high school classrooms. I understand that each student has a different way of learning. I am friendly and patient, but most importantly I really enjoy helping others learn math in their own way and hopefully will inspire a sense of enjoyment and understanding in you. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is such an important class, as it is the backbone of almost every other math class you take. Having a strong understanding of algebra will help you succeed in future math classes. I take this subject very seriously. There are different ways to learn the material, but it is important to me that the student really does learn.

Algebra 2

I enjoy algebra 2, have taught the course for two years, and tutored for many more. It's an interesting topic, with multiple approaches and ways to understand. With the implementation of common core there have been changes to the curriculum. I am aware of what is being emphasized as well as the "bigger picture" and worked with students on the difficulties these changes might present. For each student's particular learning style, there will be a way for the topics to have meaning and for him or her to succeed.

CBEST

I have taken and passed all three parts of the CBEST. I can help others prepare as I spent quite a bit of time studying for the test, especially the writing section.

Geometry

I have taken courses in Euclidean as well as Non-Euclidean Geometries. I have also learned a few methods of teaching geometry in my Credential Courses.

Precalculus

I took college Precalculus and have studied different high school precalculus curricula. This is one of my favorite topics to work with because learning it well provides a strong background for future math courses. The course also provides many problems that help the student to begin or continue to think mathematically.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry has become embedded in most high school math courses. I have taught or tutored trigonometry within algebra 2, geometry, precalculus, and calculus. I like to align my tutoring with methods the student is already learning in the classroom. But often find it useful to present different strategies and problem solving methods to best suit the needs and learning preferences of the individual student. Trig is a nice middle ground for "algebra people" and "geometry people."

Very helpful and nice!!

Because of Rachel my daughter went from crying trying to do her math homework to getting it done in one hour and being happy. Life is good at our house these days, thanks so much Rachel for making this happen.
