I am a certified California Teacher who has taught all grade levels over a span of 24 years. I have a B.S degree and an M.Ed. in Education. I make learning enjoyable, attainable and connected with the state of California standards. I enjoy developing curriculum to meet each individual student's needs, and to work directly with resources to help the student realize success in the classroom! Time goes quickly when a student works with me because we enjoy our experience and move in the direction of success! That feels great! I presently teach on a traditional year calendar, but it is the tutoring that sparks my soul and keeps me on my toes!

If you hire me for 2 or more hours a week, I will reduce my fee to $40. If you drive to me, I will reduce my fee to $37.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began taking cooking lesson in 4H many years ago, and have become an excellent cook. It is necessary to be able to read and follow a recipe, as well as know the terms specific to cooking. Using a basic cookbook is a perfect place for the beginning cook to start learning how to cook, but having a coach alongside is even better! I would enjoy sharing my experience and expertise with the beginning cook!
I am a CA and OR credentialed K-8 teacher with over 20 years experience. I have taught all grade levels, including middle, high school and college. I am presently teaching in an elementary classroom, so my skills and strategies are up-to-date! I have been a trainer of teachers for my district as well as for a national teacher-training company. Students of all ages enjoy my tutoring style, (and in all subjects), while parents appreciate seeing the progress toward proficiency! I can work closely with the classroom teacher, if the parent wishes. Every lesson is hand-chosen for that specific student, with strategic planning to make the most of our time together and to increase the student's skills. I look forward to working with you!
English is a broad topic that includes speaking, listening, writing and reading. There are specific strategies that make for success in all areas, and it is important that a teacher know those techniques and how to pass them along to the learner. I know the best ways to teach students these varied skills and to guide them toward proficiency in all areas on English.
I am a credentialed CA teacher who holds a CLAD Certificate, being certified to teach English language learners. Working one-on-one with a student wanting to learn English is a rich way to advance the learner. In addition to teaching a new language, I value the student's home language and culture; not wanting to replace or erase it.
Grammar is important in speaking and writing English and provides a solid foundation for both. Usually, if a person speaks well using correct grammar, that person's writing follows form and is not that difficult to execute. Conversely, when a person does not speak correctly, that person's writing is less proficient. So, it teaching grammar, it is important for the student to learn correct speaking and then transfer those skills into writing.
I was trained in Zaner-Bloser handwriting and have continued to use their method over the years. Handwriting is important, especially with the new Common Core focus. I teach handwriting in groups of letters that have similar strokes, and impress upon students the exact formation. A manuscript foundation is essential to move to learning cursive writing. Pencil holding, paper placement are also requisites for lovely penmanship. With computers, we have lost the art of handwriting, and I believe it is important to restore the attitude toward perfect penmanship.
Reading is not only making sense of the text, but understanding what is being read. There is a systematic way to learn how to read. I have been doing that for over 20 years, frequently individualizing the instruction. I am certified to teach reading K-8 and have done so at all levels. Tutoring a student in reading gives me an opportunity to specialize the instruction specifically for that reader. With the one-on-one guidance I provide, students gain confidence and specific reading and comprehension strategies that will directly apply to their academic program.
I have been sewing since I was in junior high and have actually sold some of my sewing projects in retail stores over the years. It is important to be able to read and follow a pattern, as well as use basic sewing techniques. Sewing takes practice. Knowledge of fabrics and how they will perform is important, as well as being able to visualize the finished product. I can help the beginning to intermediate sewer with clothing or decorative sewing projects.
Writing is an art, in my view, but it also requires a knowledge of form and function. Expository writing and narrative writing take on different voices, structure and purpose. In addition to writing instruction, I have an incredible way to collect data and facts for reports!
