About Jordan

Goals:

Jordan's goal is to teach students how to become successful and resourceful learners. Whether that learning occurs in the chemistry, physics, or math classrooms, there are general principles which help each student thrive.

Experience:

Jordan has over 10 years of college teaching, tutoring and mentoring experience. He works primarily with high school and college students taking chemistry, calculus, and algebra 2 courses. Jordan's students have moved on to prestigious undergraduate programs at the Universities of California at San Diego, Berkeley, and Irvine (UCI) and the theoretical chemistry Ph.D. program at Virginia Tech.

Jordan is a lecturer in general chemistry at California State University, Los Angeles. He brings his expertise into the classroom to illustrate the real-life impact of chemistry. This further reinforces the material, and helps to engage his students in this difficult topic. As a tutor, Jordan brings this passion for chemical education into his lessons. He furthermore reinforces subject matter through frequent quizzing, extra homework, and outside-of-lesson feedback.

Miscellaneous:

In his Ph.D. work, Jordan developed new methods to predict important photochemical bond breaking. His developments are used to understand the behavior of materials relevant to catalysis and air pollution. As a researcher at UCI, Jordan's work involves applying the principles of physics, chemistry, calculus, and other higher mathematics on a daily basis. Furthermore, Jordan's broad perspective on the field of chemistry comes from his work at a number of institutions including Princeton University, Georgia Tech, and both Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Jordan has co-authored several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and has reported his work at a number of international conferences.

As a graduate student, Jordan was representative to the University of California (UC) Student Association's Legislative Committee, which represents over 200,000 students in the UC system. Jordan lobbied state and national legislators advocating for open access to college education and for sustained public university funding to keep tuition costs down.

Fun:

As the seventh born of nine children, Jordan developed a unique capability to connect with almost anyone. When he's not talking in the third person, Jordan enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife, friends and family.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

There are two main areas of difficulty that chemistry students encounter: 1) understanding chemical principles (concepts), and 2) solving chemistry problems (applied math). Jordan prepares his students for concepts and problem solving by showing them how to think like a chemist - this is undoubtedly the most effective (and enjoyable) way for students to learn chemistry. Furthermore, he reinforces the material by frequent quizzing and outside-of-lesson follow-up.

Practically Perfect in Every Way

My teenaged son has had 11 math tutoring lessons with Jordan so far, and I expect we'll call Jordan anytime he needs additional help with math or science. We've asked Jordan to help with both Honors Geometry and Algebra II/Trig, and he knows these subjects thoroughly. He's easy to reach, incredibly accommodating, and has an easy, friendly, effective style. My son looks forward to working with J
