University of California at Irvine (PhD, Chemistry)
Experience: Jordan has over 10 years of college teaching, and mentoring experience, and has logged over 500 hours of one-to-one tutoring. He works primarily with high school and college students taking chemistry, physics, and calculus courses. Jordan’s mentee’s have moved on to prestigious undergraduate programs at the Universities of California at San Diego, Berkeley, and Irvine (UCI) and the theoretical chemistry PhD program at Virgina Tech.
Jordan is a lecturer in lower and upper division chemistry courses at a local university. He brings his expertise in photochemistry into the classroom to illustrate the real-life impact of chemistry. As a tutor, Jordan brings his passion for science and mathematics education into his lessons.
Activism for Education: When he was a graduate student at UCI, Jordan served as a graduate student body representative to the University of California (UC) Student Association’s Legislative Committee, which represents over 200,000 students in the UC system. Jordan lobbied state and national legislators, advocating for open access to college education and for sustained public university funding to keep tuition costs down. In 2011, Jordan created the first Student Forum on the UC Budget: The Future of Higher Education in California, wherein university administrators, student body representatives, and local legislators met to discuss the crises in higher education funding.
Research: In addition to his teaching Jordan is actively involved as a practicing chemist. In his PhD work, Jordan developed new methods to predict important photochemical bond breaking. His developments are used to understand the behavior of materials relevant to catalysis and air pollution. Jordan’s work involves applying the principles of physics, chemistry, calculus, and other higher mathematics on a frequent basis.
Jordan’s broad perspective on the field of chemistry and science/mathematics education comes from his research at a number of institutions including Princeton University, Georgia Tech, and both Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He has co-authored several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and has reported his work at a number of international conferences.
Fun: As the seventh born of nine children, Jordan has developed a unique capability to connect with almost anyone. When he’s not talking in the third person, Jordan enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife, friends and family.
Education: Jordan earned his PhD and MS degrees in theoretical chemistry from UCI in 2016 and 2011, respectively. In 2007, Jordan graduated magna cum laude from Saint Cloud State University, in Minnesota, with a BS in chemistry and a BA in mathematics. Experience: Jordan has over 10 years of college teaching, and mentoring experience, and has logged over 500 hours of one-to-one tutoring. He works primarily with high school and college students taking chemistry, physics, and calculus courses. My teenaged son has had 11 math tutoring lessons with Jordan so far, and I expect we'll call Jordan anytime he needs additional help with math or science. We've asked Jordan to help with both Honors Geometry and Algebra II/Trig, and he knows these subjects thoroughly. He's easy to reach, incredibly accommodating, and has an easy, friendly, effective style. My son looks forward to working with Jordan, even if it means working over a school break or on the weekends. I recommend Jordan very highly!
I was on my spring break from college, and I needed someone to reteach me the chemistry topics that I didn't understand from my high knowledge low teaching skill professor.
Jordan explained the subjects slowly and clearly that I could prepare for my exam with confidence.
Jordan is a dedicated tutor. He tries hard to help my son learn the concepts. Chemistry AP is a hard subject. He provides homework to asses his learning. We are very happy with his lessons so far.
One of the most important tools for success is to have an organized plan. Jordan set this plan on the first day and continues to add / adjust. He provided techniques and strategies to reduce test taking anxiety .
Hi, my daughter was struggling in chemistry and she has severe ADHD, when she started with Mr. Jordan she was frustrated because he was using electornic device to explain the lesson to her which distracted her and wasn't paying attention to the actual lesson. Then quickly Mr Jordan realized her ADHD problem and the next lesson he used paper and pen and changed his strategy according to her needs. He is very smart knowledgable and my daughter is doing great in her classroom. Thank you wyzant for providing great tutors like Mr Jordan.
My son really enjoyed his lesson on quantum chemistry because Jordan explained it so well and made it really easy to understand.
As an older student re-entering college I found I needed a tutor and Jordan was wonderfully kind and patient. He not only came completely prepared to all of our tutoring sessions but also gave me homework to do and was available for questions. I absolutely highly recommend him.
Jordan is an awesome tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable in chemistry and math and knows how to teach. He helped my daughter tremendously. I wish we had found him sooner. I highly recommend him!
Jordan is patient and completely focused on my son and his Chemistry. He helped my son prepare for this week's class and even gave him some work to do later on during the week. We are enjoying working with him and look forward to many more lessons. I recommend him.
Jordan was able to clarify the material (high school Chemistry) very well. My son felt that he explained the material thoroughly. Jordan even followed up with material to help with review and study. Highly recommend.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a college chemistry professor with over 10 years experience teaching and tutoring the subject. Students appreciate my ability to clearly explain concepts and calculation procedures.
