About Rachel

Hi,
I have had about 8 years of teaching experience. During my 8 years of teaching experience, I have worked with a wide range of ages, more specifically working with children who are in kindergarten all the way up to high school. Therefore, I have worked with kids on a variety of subjects. For example, during my work with kindergarteners, I have reviewed sight words as well as reviewed the alphabet. We have also gone over some basic math of addition and subtraction. While a teacher, I have also worked with students on reading comprehension as well as middle school level math. In addition to working as a teacher, I have also tutored children in foreign languages, language arts, essay writing, and mathematics. As a tutor, I have worked with middle school students as well as kindergarteners. I have a strong work ethic and I am able to motivate students to achieve and put forth their best effort. I believe in positive reinforcement and thus consistently pointing out the growth and progress that my students make. With all of the students that I have worked with, I have seen them make great progress.

I am a patient and encouraging individual and I believe in working with students where they are at. In other words, I believe in recognizing each student's unique talents and strengths and encouraging them to utilize those talents and strengths to make even more progress and achievement. I also try to set forth specific guidelines, boundaries and expectations, as children also need to be given guidance on what bounds within which they can work.

Furthermore, I have worked with all ages of children and therefore am able to adapt my teaching style and communication methods to the group with which I am working.

In closing, I love teaching, learning, and connecting.

As for my education, I attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where I earned a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies. I also took early childhood education classes at Santa Monica Community College. During my time at Santa Monica Community College, I took a class entitled Strategies for for Working with Children with Special Needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a substitute teacher for grades k-6, during which I have worked with kids on writing 5 paragraph essays and related concepts such as supporting details, and main ideas. I have also worked on students with vocabulary and reading comprehension. In working with students on reading comprehension, I have used a variety of techniques to encourage to make sure they understand for themselves what they are reading. One of these strategies has been having kids create a visual representation of what they just read. I have also had kids read a paragraph at a time and then try to paraphrase what they just read and have worked with kids on creating a sequential summary of the events that they just read about.

Special Needs

I have experience in working with children with special needs. Not only did I tutor a kindergartener with autism, but as a subsitute teacher, I have also worked with students who have special needs. Additionally, during my coursework at SMC (Santa Monica Community College), I took a class in which we learned about strategies for working with children with special needs. Additionally, I have worked with children at a variety of ages.
