About Allia

My Mission Statement

I am committed to a positive learning environment that advocates diversity, understanding, and acceptance. Where ignorance and misunderstanding exist, I see a challenging teaching opportunity. Only through learning are we able to better ourselves and only through understanding can we progress forward.

I come from a family of teachers and have received my California Teaching Credential from Cal State University San Marcos. My degree is in Teaching English with an emphasis in ESL and essay composition. My skills have been honed to reflect the same methods and techniques used by teachers in the classroom. Because I received my degree in Teaching English, many believe that I had an inherent ability to be amazing in English. This was not the case. I did not have the ability to speak or even write anything in the English language till fifth grade and continued to struggle throughout middle school even into high school. School was a challenge for me but challenges are no match for an individual who refuses to give up. My hard work allowed me to graduate high school and continue on to a four year university, but I have never forgotten all those long hours; Those hours fueled me to attain my Master's degree in Literature and Writing Studies, where I was given the opportunity to teach composition courses at California State University San Marcos. After moving to the Los Angeles area, I worked as a GRE instructor while teaching at a charter school in Compton. I currently teach College Composition and Literature at Saddleback College, Irvine College, and Cerritos College.

I have taken every opportunity available to be a participant in education. I have completed all of my teaching observation time and have tutored a variety of students from AP to at-risk youth. I enjoy the challenges of tutoring a variety of students. No student learns and retains material the same way. I do not have a specific tutoring method because I prefer adapting my style to fit the learning style of the student. “Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.” - George Evans

I sincerely appreciate the time you have taken to read about me and my background. Thank you again and I hope to hear from you soon.

(I am also available for online/video call/Skype tutoring sessions.)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My degree is in Teaching English with an emphasis in ESL and essay composition. I have a Master's degree in Literature.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL is my specialty. I recently received my California Teaching Credential from Cal State University San Marcos with an SB 2042 clearance which allows me to teach "instruction for English language development in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults." I graduated from Humboldt State with a degree in English specifically geared toward teaching English not only in a high school setting but also with an emphasis in ESL/EFL. I have taken many courses that have trained me with the necessary skills to teach and tutor a student whose first language is not English. I have taken courses from Structure of American English to English as a Foreign Language to Communication in Writing. I also volunteered at my college's writing lab assisting ESL students with their essays and papers. I was also an ESL student and spend the majority of my free time reading techniques and lesson plan ideas specifically geared toward learning English.

GRE

I have taught the GRE preparatory course at numerous college institutions.

Phonics

I graduated from Humboldt State with a degree in English specifically geared toward teaching English not only in a high school setting but also with an emphasis in ESL/EFL. I have taken many courses that have trained me with the necessary skills to teach and tutor a student whose first language is not English which has benefited me immensely in the teaching of phonics and reading.

Theatre

Theatre is one of my passions. While I was in high school, I took drama for many years and my team and I won first place at Cal State Fullerton's Improv competition. I have also auditioned for many plays while having been in the casters seat as well assisting the director in casting the roles for Temecula Valley High School's "Putnam County National Spelling Bee." I have coached and mentored many other actors and actresses as well in preparation for their film or stage auditions. Because of my experience in theatre, I have excelled in public speaking and coaching others in this area as well.

Writing

I have a Master's degree in Writing Studies, where I was given the opportunity to teach composition courses at California State University San Marcos. I currently teach College Composition and Literature at Saddleback College, Irvine College, and Cerritos College.
