Hello! I am a working artist and an art and English educator. I have been a high school and adult education teacher, and I run a working studio. I have a Master's of Art Education from University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth, and a MFA in metalsmithing/jewelry from the University of Houston and my BA is in Comparative Literature/English. I have run an art studio since 1988, specializing in metals. I also have taught many subjects over the years, including English, writing, home economics and swimming (where I have been a lifeguard, instructor and head coach of several swim teams). I also can assist students in their formal writing skills. I love to teach, especially in areas where students really are timid, such as art or swimming, where I can help students overcome their fears and really tackle areas that can be scary! I try to be very flexible, and figure out ways in which to help EACH student with his or her particular needs, so that confidence can be built up, and big strides can be made. I enjoy constructing units that combine art production with writing, historical research, and scientific/mathematic design. I believe that the arts and these other fields of study are intertwined and that connections need to be fostered across the curricula to help students understand better.

I have taught many different units based upon many facets of the arts ranging from methods, tools, techniques, art theory, art criticism and art history, and writing about the arts. Following is a list of some of the technique-based units I have designed and taught: Drawing/portraiture acrylics/painting, pen and ink/scrimshaw, ocarina (flute) building, polymer clay, plastics/cold connections, jewelry/metals casting, ceramics, sculpture, mobiles, tie-dye, quilting, fabrics, weaving, glass lampworking/bead making, wood carving, 2-d design/3-d design, enameling, mosaics and batik. In addition to these materials-oriented units, I have designed curriculum based upon specific techniques, such as Surrealism, Pointillism, Impressionism, Dadaism, or specific artists, such as Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, prehistoric artists or Vincent Van Gogh.

I have taught English, grammar, vocabulary, writing, literary analysis and organizational skills at the high school level. I have experience in proofreading grants and for volunteering with kids as well. I really want kids to succeed and feel confidence when working in these subjects. I also have experience in helping kids in "scary" situations, and I teach swimming and art as well, both subjects that are nerve-wracking for many people. I also try to be flexible in trying various methods to help kids when one method might not be the best. Writing skills are a major underpinning for many careers, so I like to stress this point with kids that might think these skills aren't really "necessary."
