About Richard

I enjoy helping others succeed. Tutoring is one way that I am able to give back, and help people achieve their educational goals. I graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine in May 2014, and I am now beginning to work on completing a physiology PhD. I am excited to spend time during my PhD helping other students work toward their educational goals in in the same way that I have and will continue.

I specialize in teaching the subjects of my acquired degrees, a Medical Doctorate and a BS Chemistry emphasis in Biochemistry. Generically, this means math and science. More specific examples include: biology, physiology, biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, genetics, immunology, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, algebra, biostatistics, physics, and several other subjects. I also specialize in standardized test preparation and strategy in addition to teaching subjects on the ACT, SAT, MCAT, and USMLE exams. Outside of my schooling, I am qualified to provide swim and spring-board diving lessons.

I take pride in rapid communication. I reply to emails within 24 hours and usually within 12, and I respond to phone and text message communication immediately. I am available for phone communication 24 hours per day. You can text or call me at any time. I may be sleeping but I will respond or call back immediately once I am awake.

I am very flexible with my tutoring times. If I am not working on my PhD or playing soccer (health is important), I will tutor. This includes very late at night or early in the morning. Don’t be afraid to ask for times like 5am or 11pm. Just ask me, and I will communicate with you if that time works for me.

I want my students and parents to be satisfied with the service I provide. If my students or parents are not completely satisfied with my tutoring, I will not bill for the tutoring session.

I like to find quality study locations by communicating the potential students. Once you contact me requesting tutoring, we can arrange a tutoring location that works best for both of us.

I am excited to help you find academic success! Please contact me with any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I performed highly in all of my math classes through calculus two. Additionally I have tutored many students in algebra one all the way through calculus. I am very comfortable interacting with students, and I am very patient. My goal is to help you become an independent learner.

Macintosh

I started and have been operating a tech support business for the doctors at my hospital for the last two years. I was already well versed in technology related subjects before starting my business, but now I provide tech support for as many as 2-3 clients per week. Although some of my clients ask for help with PC's, my typical clients are students, professors, and doctors who are poorly versed in the use of the Macintosh operating system or Mac related software. Very often I help clients setup and learn to use a recently purchased Macintosh computer. For other clients, I have helped them install a solid state drive to improve the performance of their computer. For other clients, I have helped with purchasing decisions. For other clients, I have helped improve their usage of specific Macintosh related applications such as iTunes or iPhoto. I want to be clear that I do not have programming skills, the tech support I provide is specifically related to interaction with the OS and related software as well as hardware replacement and modification. My tech support is very similar to what you would experience if you were to schedule an appointment with the genius bar at Apple store.

MCAT

My goal is to provide rationale for my qualifications to prepare other students to take the MCAT. I graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 2014. Medical school is 4 years, and starting in the second year of medical school, I began worked for my medical school as a tutor for other medical students. That was 6 years ago, and I am still tutoring for my medical school. I have tutored close to 1000 hours for my medical school. In undergrad, I maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated with a B.S. Biochemistry. In medical school, I graduated with a high recommendation from my Dean's office. I am currently completing a PhD in Physiology at Loma Linda University and my current GPA after 2 years of coursework is a 3.92. During my PhD I have also tutored other PhD students. As final proof of that my knowledge base is sufficient for MCAT tutoring, my MCAT score was a 34 (12, 10, 12). I have provided all of this information to support that I not only have the knowledge to tutor other students on the MCAT but I also have extensive experience tutoring students in medical and basic science related topics.

Swimming

I swam competitively from age 4 until age 18 (usually year round, but there were a couple winters I took off). When I was 14, I began to teach swim lessons and acquired my Water Safety Instructor qualification. From the age of 14 until I was 21, I taught swim lessons professionally at the Levite Jewish Community Center in Birmingham, Alabama. When I went to medical school at Loma Linda University in CA, I had to put my swim lesson teaching on hold because of time constraints. Now that I have finished medical school (2014), I am once again interested in providing swim lessons. As a summary, I have taught swim lessons professionally for 7 years and I have acquired (although not current) my Water Safety Instructor license. On a side note, I also worked as a lifeguard for 7 years and a spring board dive coach for 5 years. Both of these do not directly qualify me to teach swim lessons, but while giving swim lessons, students will be very safe because of my life guarding history. If desired, I can also teach students spring board diving technique.

Great Tutor!

Richard is great at working with teens. My kids relate to him well, and he makes reviewing algebra concepts a positive experience. My daughter stated that since he is a student as well, he understands how she feels. He comes to lessons prepared, making good use of the time my kids spend with him. Very responsive to texts and email. We're happy with him so far.
