National University (Enrolled)
I have been teaching and tutoring for the past 4 years. I am a junior in college pursuing a BS in Accounting. I attend National University through online classes to allow me to work every day. I currently have a 3.0 GPA and I am on track to graduate in 2017. I have worked with a wide range of students inside and outside of schools. My work experience has been in K-8 schools as a mainstream aide for special needs students. I've also worked as a tutor for students of all ages and skill levels. I mostly tutor in math because that is where I am most experienced.
My drive to teach stems from my experiences within the special needs community, specifically Autism and Down Syndrome. While the bulk of my professional experience is within special needs, it has made me a very competent and patient tutor for those without special needs as well. I have a strong desire for progress and understand that every student has unique needs and learning techniques. I strongly believe that each student requires a unique learning experience to meet their full potential.
My teaching method for tutoring is a bit different than most. Students call me by my first name and discussions stay lighthearted. This maintains a positive learning environment that will not be seen as "extra homework" or "school time" and makes tutoring something students can look forward to attending. Students of all ages are addressed as peers and treated with the same respect I would like to receive. I often insist students explain what they've learned to ensure me that the lesson is well-received.
During my time as a paraprofessional, I worked in K-8 classrooms learning Common Core curriculum. I have attended several training sessions for paraprofessionals for reading and behavior. I've become familiar with many of the new and different teaching methods that have been associated with common core, especially the strange ways math problems can be presented. I also have training in Math180 and Read180 intervention programs.
I've tutored or taken the following math classes in high school and college levels:
Common Core Math K-8, Pre-calculus, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Math A, Math B, Math 70, Math 90, Geometry, Economics.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
