About Mary

I have a Master's degree from CSU Sacramento. I have been an adult and college-level instructor for over 30 years. I started tutoring undergraduate and graduate students and taught ESL to adults while in graduate school, and went on to teach at the adult and college level. I believe writers of any age and ability can improve their writing with the help of an experienced "fresh set of eyes" on their work. I not only teach, but also have real-world experience in editing and proofreading: first, as a writer of resumes and copy editor for an arts publication company; second, as a copy and wire editor for two newspapers.

I have a broad education in and understanding of a variety of non-English related subjects, including art, history, science, and study skills. I can advise students on MLA or APA documentation style, research conventions, and research paper writing techniques such as paraphrase and summary. I have six years of experience teaching creative writing, including poetry, short stories, and longer works. I also offer editing and proofreading services.

I will respond within eight hours to email inquiries. I have a two-hour cancellation window, but I will also offer makeup sessions.

I'd love to get you started toward improved writing! Please email me with any questions and to learn more about how I can help you, or schedule a lesson to get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a graduate of UC Davis (BA English Literature) and CSU Sacramento (BA English, with emphasis in TESOL). I have 30 years of experience teaching writing, ESL, research writing, and creative writing at the adult and college level. I am a published poet and award-winning playwright.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking for 16 years with the University of Phoenix. The structure of a speech is very much like the structure of a good essay: a good speech has an introduction (tell them what you're going to the them); a well organized body with plenty of evidence (tell them); and a conclusion that wraps up and reinforces your argument (tell them what you just told them). Most of all, public speakers need to know their audience's characteristics, knowledge level on the subject, and overall attitudes on a topic before planning a speech. Persuasive techniques I teach include classical rhetoric (a la Aristotle), the Toulmin sequence, and Monroe's Motivated sequence.
