About Andrew-Joseph

For most of my life, tutoring has been like taking a trip to the beach. Though, theoretically, I could do it every day, I have not ventured to do so as much as I would like. The few experiences I did have, however, were very fulfilling, and I am now taking it upon myself to tutor even more.

My first time really tutoring was in high school, holding weekly physics sessions with a few of my juniors. Then, during my second year at UCLA, I participated in a club that took trips twice a week to elementary and middle schools in the area, tutoring in a variety of subjects.

My most recent tutoring experience was the summer of 2014; I had the privilege of aiding international Japanese students with their pursuit of fluency in English. That was the best summer of my life, but I believe even the joy I felt that summer can be eclipsed if I continue mentoring whomever I can.

I scored a 770 on the SAT's math section in 2009, and while at UCLA I successfully completed courses including multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I firmly believe this was facilitated by my strong grasp of algebraic and precalculus fundamentals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

Despite my lack of official accolades in grammar, a complete understanding of the linguistic rules of English is something I pride myself on. I have experience helping both native English speakers as well as non-native English speakers improve their grasp of grammar. English grammar, at its core, is just a (perhaps large) set of rules that one must understand and be able to apply. Once that is achieved, recognizing both correct and incorrect grammar becomes quite an easy task.

Precalculus

As I mentioned in my bio, I took classes at UCLA up to differential equations. For one to succeed in such a class, a solid grasp of algebra and calculus is necessary. The most important concepts are taught in prealgebra through precalculus; these are the fundamentals one must be perfectly comfortable with to succeed, and I believe my understanding of these fundamentals are very strong. I had the pleasure of helping my youngest sister with math throughout her high school experience; she ended up achieving a 5 on her AP Calculus test.
