Bio

I have taught in public schools for over 13 years as a substitute teacher, but have also done both long-term sub jobs and contract jobs, as well.

By my background being in computer science, I have strong math skills. Out of all of the subjects that I teach, kids always draw pictures of me teaching them math. By my background being in computer science, I have strong math skills. Out of all of the subjects that I teach, kids always draw pictures of me teaching them math. I am often told by students that math problems that were once perceived as being hard to them, are now easy to them. I try to make subjects simple for students, ensuring that they get a good foundation.

I have been called in to take over classes where test scores have been low, and was able to bring the test scores up dramatically. I once was called in to takeover a class at the end of a school year where 55% of the students were below basic. When the students took their final tests for that year, 65% of them scored advanced and proficient.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor grades K -6 because I have worked with these grade levels for over 13 years in California’s public schools. Because I teach in the public schools, I know what the State of California requires of its students. As a teacher in California’s public schools, I am required to both develop lesson plans and to teach from the State’s curriculum. I’ve also had to academically prepare students for the California Benchmark Tests and the California Standards Tests. There was a time when my students scored the highest in the entire school on these tests, and another time when my students scored the highest in their grade level. My focus in teaching children is to extract the complexity out of a subject and impart simplicity. For this is the only way that most children will comprehend a subject.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

In order to work in California’s public schools as a teacher, one has to not only have a college degree, but must also pass the required State exams. I have done both and am certified and registered with the State of California to teach in its public schools. I am also degreed in the Computer Science field where math is a big requirement. In teaching math, my focus is to take the fear out of doing math, especially word problems. I am often thanked by parents and students for making a subject that once difficult for them to do, now become easy for them to do. My focus is to take the fear out of doing math, especially word problems. Therefore, I am qualified to tutor this subject.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am qualified to tutor phonics, because I teach grades pre-school through 12th. Children in the lower grade levels are taught the names and sounds of the alphabet. They’re also taught how to blend the sounds of different letters. I often run into children who feel as though they are not as smart as other students because of their inability to read or spell. When I pull these students aside and work with them on their phonics and blending, they are just so amazed that they can both read and spell. A lot of times when children ask me how to spell a word, I help them out by just giving them the phonics of the letters. Again, they are so amazed when they discover that they have spelled the word themselves.
Reading,

Reading

In order to work in California’s public schools as a teacher, one has to not only have a college degree, but must also pass the required State exams. I have done both and am certified and registered with the State of California to teach in its public schools. Teaching students their phonics and blending is vital in teaching students how to read, and is a part of everyday teaching. Without learning their phonics, students will never learn how to spell nor read. When teaching students to read, I ensure that students are truly reading and not just memorizing words. Because of all of the aforementioned, I am qualified to tutor in the subject of reading.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have taught in public schools for over 13 years as a substitute teacher, but have also done both long-term sub jobs and contract jobs, as well. I am qualified to tutor students in improving their study skills because I have to prepare students for taking chapter tests and state tests. I tell students that tests are designed to see if they really know what they claim to know. In answering questions or solving problems, I instruct students to restate to themselves or write down what they are being asked to do, and then to state to themselves or write down what they know. I teach students how to tackle a question or problem from different angles in order to prepare them for testing. However, understanding that students learn differently, I incorporate different study skills to address the different learning methods. For instance, for the visual and kinesthetic learners, I may use manipulatives, games, and other activities to improve their comprehension on a subject. This has been very successful in teaching special needs students.
