About Yesenia

Beginning in Middle School I found that I enjoyed teaching and helping others. This was the beginnings of my pursuit to attend college and obtain the necessary credentials in order to become a teacher.

I've never shrunk away from a challenge, which is why I have taken Honors and AP classes all throughout High School, all of which I have passed. I took Marching Band for my last two years in High School along with all of my AP Classes. Through Band is where I found I had a passion for music. Within those two years I have learned a large amount and will continue to pursue this passion throughout my life.

My knowledge of tutoring begins with my joining the California Scholarship Federation. This club was founded years ago with the purpose of creating tutors out of students so that they may assist their fellow students in whatever subjects that they struggle with. For those two years I helped a few students with Japanese, Basic Math, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. However my strongest points would be English and Music, though I am completely open to assisting with the subject mentioned above.

My teaching methods stem from a year in Psychology AP. I learned that the most effective form of teaching, especially for the younger students, is positive reinforcement. This involves rewarding students for their accomplishments as opposed to punishment for their failures (which is negative reinforcement). If someone is struggling it is more effective to encourage than to punish them. This, I believe, should be a fundamental strategy of any and all tutors/teachers.

Being able to connect, laugh, and help students enjoy learning is something difficult. Each person has their own interests, thus each person should be taught in a way that fits them. School systems make it difficult for every student to obtain all of the individual attention that they need to be very successful, therefore obtaining a tutor to help them develop their own form of study would be extremely beneficial.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been a composer for as long as I have been able to read music, which is 5 years. I am currently attending college as a Music Composition Major and have junior status. I have taken a multitude of composition courses where we are sometimes given guidelines and sometimes given free range to compose as we please. I believe this method is the best to foster a students own confidence in their compositions. I also offer a large amount of knowledge of composition techniques and the time periods in which they were most used and most popular.

Ear Training

I have had intensive ear training lessons for 2 years and am able to hear intervals in both melodic and harmonic dictations. Training one's ears to hear intervals takes a lot of time and practice and I plan to instill this diligent practice into each of my students. Ear Training begins with intervals and gradually expands to being able to write down a melody, finally ending with Harmonic where the student is able to hear multiple notes at once and name them.

Piano

I've been playing piano for over 5 years and have taken lessons in a fast-paced college environment for 2 years. I spend the majority of my time teaching this particular subject focusing on proper fingering of scales/chords and developing proper technique. Also, I like to challenge my students by having them sight read simple pieces, so as time passes they will be able to focus more on technique and execution as opposed to spending the majority of the time reading the music slowly. However, I am able to adapt easily to each students level of music theory in order to eventually reach the goal of focusing on performance.

Reading

I have been tutoring children as young as two for a few years. I feel it is best to read simple and short books carefully, emphasizing each and every sound, syllable, and pronunciation. This is done aloud in order to understand reading visually and aurally. This process can be long and arduous, therefore I make it a point to have conversations about what we are reading in order to help the student maintain interest.

Sight Singing

I've had intensive sight singing lessons for two years in addition to general music practice and study. I always begin sight singing lessons with developing a strong and comfortable ability to read music. From there the sight singing pieces are usually a few measures long and are mostly stepwise and as the student progresses the pieces that they will sight sing will become increasingly difficult. The only way to become a strong sight reader of music is to sight read.

Voice (Music)

I've had two years of intensive vocal training that focused on technique and sight singing. Teaching voice always begins with finding the tonic of a C major within a drone. Learning solfege and practicing long tones are become the basis for vocal training and that quickly expands into practicing pieces from various styles of music. Along with sight singing, the student will eventually be able to come to my lessons with their own pieces prepared that they simply have to have polished.

Caring tutor — Extremely patient with me; I liked the fact that she suggested one hour(instead of 2hrs) at a time since I am a TRUE beginner which showed me that she cared! Can't wait to have my next lesson with her... ...
