Hi! I'm Matt! I'm a student who is ultimately pursuing a degree in Computational Linguistics, which is a combination of math, linguistics, English, and computer science. I studied first at University of California - Santa Barbara, and now at Antelope Valley College. I graduated from Quartz Hill High School as a valedictorian.
I have also mentored various FIRST Robotics teams for the past six years. This program challenges middle and high school students to design, create, and innovate solutions for various real world problems. I have assisted students by teaching them about the engineering process and the scientific method, as well as by guiding them by providing concrete examples to serve as a foundation for their ideas and gentle nudges towards more feasible designs through the use of introspective questions.
All of the teams I have mentored have consistently made it past the qualifiers to at least the regional level, where they have won numerous project and design awards. Most recently, this year, one of my team won the Champion´s Award at the High Desert Lego Classic tournament, which is the highest award possible. These competitions are intense and competitive, involving dozens of teams from all over, so winning any award is a major achievement.
In addition to tutoring, I also work as an instructional assistant for students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems at a middle school. Here, I gently and patiently guide students towards a better understanding of Math and English using the same skills I acquired mentoring robotics teams, coupled with the knowledge that I have obtained of both subjects in my studies of computational linguistics.
I try to teach my students what they need to know from the ground up. For example, I ensure that students understand the reasons why you would use some formula in math instead of just telling them to use it, which has always been one of my frustrations. I find that this allows more complicated topics to be put in terms of simpler ones students already know, allowing students to not only learn new material faster, but truly master it as well.
I am a very patient and easygoing person, and am great at deescalating and defusing negative attitudes, something which I practice daily as an instructional assistant. Usually, I get along great with students, and I love it when they ask me questions! The best part of my day is always when their "Uhh"s transform into "OH!"s of understanding.
I'm available for online tutoring at any of the specified times, but I usually can only do in-person tutoring on the weekends. However, if you absolutely need me to come in person during the week, feel free to contact me and we may be able to work something out. Whatever the case, I look forward to working with you!

I studied Spanish in high school and college for 3 years, and now study it independently. I frequently talk with friends in Peru and Spain, so even though Spanish may not be my native language, I can speak it well. Estudí español en secondaria y universidad por 3 años, y sigue que estudiarlo independiemente. Cada día suelo hablar con mis amigos de Peru y de España, así que puedo hablar con fluencia a pesar de que español no es mi lengua nativa.

Computational linguistics may sound like it only involves a bunch of math and computer programming (well, it does), but computational linguistics is also the study of how natural languages (like English) work. As a result, I know the ins and outs of how to write a good paper on whatever subject you would like! Additionally, in high school I received 4s and 5s (out of 5) on the English AP tests, and frustrated my English teachers by finishing the vocabulary testing system Membean, which was supposed to take a full four years, in one. As a result, I know some tricks that can help you score highly too!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Matthew is an excellent and patient Tutor, he was able to build rapport with my reluctant 11 year old and actually got something writing completed the first class and learned about how to use quotes and some prepositions. We will definitely schedule more to help my son write more fluidly and creatively. Thanks for your patience, Matthew.
