About Debra

From professionally tutoring K-12 to working with college students in school and ministry, I have gained exposure to a variety of educational needs. I am passionate about education and consider myself to be a learner for life. I am always eager to learn and grow and will take any opportunity to encourage others to do likewise. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Sacramento.

I have experience tutoring multiple subjects including, but not limited to, Language Arts, Basic Math, Algebra, Geometry, Social Studies, Government, & Science. In college, I had the privilege to take part in "Conversational Partners," a ministry geared towards helping international students develop a firm grasp of the English language. Other teaching ministries that I have taken part in are: Trend House, where I tutored children of all ages from high need areas and women's bible study, which I co-lead for the clients at my current job. One of the many things that I love about tutoring is the moment when "the lights go on" in a student's mind and they have the joy of discovery.

I have tutored Algebra 1 on many different occasions professionally and I feel confident in my ability to teach the subject well. I enjoy problem solving and working with formulas and this subject grants me the best of both worlds.

I have taken a number of Spanish classes and have received an "A+" in each of them. I am always looking for ways to practice the language and keep myself sharp. I am constantly sharing with others about what I have learned and often speak Spanish with native speakers. I am able to empathize with anyone that may be intimidated by learning other languages and I can share what has worked for me. This is one of my favorite subjects.

I have had the pleasure of studying English from several outstanding professors. Being able to communicate effectively is crucial in our society. I take my studies very seriously and am careful to proof-read everything that I write. In my spare time, I often take part in creative composition competitions and of my ongoing goals is to be a walking thesaurus. I carry these techniques into other areas as well. As I mentioned earlier, my co-worker and I lead a women's bible study for our clients at work.
We prepare the lessons ourselves, tailor them to what we believe the Holy Spirit would have us to say, and make certain that they are rooted in scripture. I have been to seminary for a season and, if anyone is hungry to learn the Word of God, I am happy to lend a helping hand. 2 Timothy 2:15 says "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." We work hard to understand the bible and that brings honor to God.

I have a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance (Classical) so, needless to say, I really enjoy music! I know from experience that any well rounded musician, classical or otherwise, would do well to learn the fundamentals of their craft. I can teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced theory.

Typically, I am free on Thursdays and Fridays but I am flexible. Just let me know what works for you and do not be afraid to ask questions if you need clarification.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been studying the bible for many years and have even attended seminary for a time. I have co-led a women's bible study and will not turn down an opportunity to share God's word with anyone that is willing to learn. 2 Timothy 2:15 says "study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
