About Kristin

I am a teacher. I have chosen to work in the field of education because even when I am having a horrible day, I know my actions are helping to make positive changes for others. It is my duty to work myself out of a job. I have experience with helping individuals as young as age 3 through adult. I can tutor in reading, writing, math, science, history and test prep. My favorite thing to teach is organization and study skills, because I believe that if you can keep yourself organized and know how to study in the unique way that benefits you, then you have unlimited potential to find your own happiness.

When I am not at work I am very fond of playing games. I grew up in a family that played card games, board games and video games on a regular basis. I love the varies mental challenges that games can provide and enjoy strategizing with others. My two favorite types of games are deck builders and dexterity games. I enjoys trying to incorporate games into studying and learning as much as possible. There is no reason that learning and studying cannot be fun.

I love helping others to reach their full academic potential. I have been a special education teacher for 8 years. I received my bachelors from the California State University of Channel Islands where I majored in liberal studies - teaching concentration and minored in environmental science resource management. From there I went to Sacramento where I attended Fortune School of Education in order to obtain my Education Specialist California teaching credential. I continued my education at University of the Pacific where I acquired my master's in Special Education. In addition to my special education teaching credential I have added authorization in autism spectrum.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have about my previous experience, qualifications or scheduling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had 8 years of experience implementing systematic instruction and teaching organization in order to give students strategies to cope with inattentive tendencies, impulsiveness and the need for stimulation. Difficulty tending to a task and impulsiveness is not a choice for a person diagnosed with ADHD or ADD. I help give students the self help tools they need in order to be independently successful.

Algebra 1

I am a teacher and have had experience with both teaching and tutoring in algebra 1. I understand many of the concepts can be difficult when hearing them for the first time so I like to do as much hands on activities as possible.

Anatomy

Anatomy can be tricky to study because there is a lot of memorization to do. Studying with someone else can be beneficial to many types of learners. I have experience with assisting students from learning from their own notes and text or using other materials.

Aspergers

I hold an education specialist California teaching credential with an added authorization to teach students who fall on the autism spectrum, which includes Asperger. I have experience with helping students interpret nonverbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions. My favorite part of working with someone with Asperger is helping them to fit in socially by helping them to feel prepared for social events and have strategies on how to interact with peers.

Autism

I hold an education specialist California teaching credential with an added authorization to teach students who fall on the autism spectrum. I love to create visual schedules, set obtainable goals and help students reach their full potential. Just because someone may perceive the world differently then you doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, it just means they may need to go about things in a different style.

Common Core

During the year before California adopted common core standards I wrote all of my IEP goals using only the California state standards that were also found in the common core strands. I have attended several district wide trainings on common core math and common core language arts curriculum.

Dyslexia

I am a special education teacher and have seen dyslexia affect students in many different ways. I know that dyslexia is much more complicated then just letter or numbers being perceived as switched around. In the past I have helped students practice and master strategies that work for them resulting in higher self esteem and a stronger willingness to work.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a special education teacher. I hold a valid California teaching credential for students with mild to moderate disabilities. I have been a RSP teacher for 8 years, 4 of those years have been in elementary school.

Elementary Math

I have a California teaching credential that allows me to work with students that are having difficulty in math. I have experience working with students that have difficulty with number sense, applied problems, fluency, as well as showing work in an organized and legible way.

ESL/ESOL

I have a California teaching credential that permits me to work with students who are learning English.

Geometry

I have taught middle school for 4 years and understand that not everyone learns the same way. I enjoy tutoring math because even though it is an organized and systematic topic you can still do a lot of hands on activities and have fun with it.

Handwriting

I have worked with both elementary and middle school students to help them improve the legibility of their handwriting. I have experience with several handwriting styles such as printing, D'Nealian and cursive. In addition to experience with student instruction, I have many resources that I can share with parents so that help them encourage their students to practice outside of tutoring time.

Microsoft Outlook

During my 8 years of teaching I have used outlook for e-mail and calendar. I can send e-mails to both individuals and groups. I can ensure that I am setting up meetings at the most beneficial time by accessing the availability of other outlook users and viewing their calendar. I can set up tasks and to-do lists using the outlook functions.

Phonics

I have been trained in SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words). I have experience developing my own curriculum based on student progress and mastery.

Prealgebra

I have taught in a middle school for 4 years. I have experience with collaborating with pre-algebra teachers to help students of all different ability levels to master pre-algebra concepts and show work in a organized/legible way.

Reading

I have been trained in SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words). I have experience developing my own curriculum based on student progress and mastery.

Special Needs

I hold a valid California teaching credential for students with mild to moderate disabilities. I have 8 years of experience working with students with various special needs that manifest themselves as physical or academic difficulties. We all have the capability to do well, some of us just need to go about it in a different way.

Study Skills

I have been a RSP teacher for 8 years, 4 of those years have been in middle school were I taught a study skills class which covered studying techniques, organization, note writing techniques, calendar and task planning.
