About Gary

Hi!

Math is all around us, and I believe that we all need to know how to use it in our daily lives. Unfortunately, math can be mysterious and difficult to understand at times. Sometimes a little extra explanation, or some additional guided practice, is needed to grasp a new concept, and that is where I can help. Because I feel so strongly about the importance of math skills, I am passionate about helping students overcome their math challenges and I would love to help you too.

I was fortunate that math made sense to me from an early age. After doing well in high school, I went on to study computer science at U.C. San Diego, and ultimately graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering with an overall 3.54 GPA. I also completed graduate level work in Structural Engineering at U.C. Berkeley. My coursework included math courses through calculus, as well as linear algebra and differential equations, earning mostly A's in those courses. My academic record garnered me admission to the Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor societies, as well as the Golden Key National Honor Society.

While I am currently new to Wyzant, I am not new to tutoring. My first tutoring experience occurred while I was in 8th grade when a fellow student asked if I could tutor their younger sibling. I tutored off-and-on during the ensuing years, particularly while attending college where I worked as a teaching assistant in computer labs at UCSD, or worked with fellow engineering students at SDSU. I have been tutoring online for the past six-plus years and have helped thousands of students (or their parents) to understand topics ranging from elementary school math through calculus, as well as in statistics, physics, computer science, and finance.

My experience in tutoring has taught me a couple of important points. The first is that every student has their own approach to learning. Some students may only need a better explanation, while others may need guided practice to truly master a new concept. Some may need something that they can physically manipulate, while others may need real-life examples to study. The second point is that, while there are often many ways to solve a problem, a student is often constrained to solve problems in the specific manner that their course is teaching.

These two points shape my approach to working with a new student. During our first meeting we will discuss where you are currently at in your studies, what you understand, and what is giving you trouble. We will also discuss how best to approach the task and what learning methods work best for you. If you are currently enrolled in a class, we will discuss the expectations of your instructor and the content of your textbook or other course material so that I can make sure that we do not stray from the course’s path. My purpose is to reinforce what your course is teaching, not to undermine it with unrelated techniques.

I emphasize a logical and structured approach to problem solving that includes drawing sketches of the problem as needed, and listing the known information, the unknown information, and the applicable equations. I also teach students to check their work, and to form an estimate of a reasonable answer before solving the problem, as it helps to catch many routine errors in calculation.

I currently specialize in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. However, I am also capable of helping with everything from basic math through calculus, as well as statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, physics, and a variety of computer programming languages.

I am generally available seven days a week, from 9 am to 10 pm (Pacific time). Arrangements can be made for early morning sessions if needed. My base rate for in-person lessons is $30/hour. Rates for online lessons, group lessons, and multi-lesson packages are determined based on the particular requirements. Please contact me to discuss your specific needs.

I am certain that together we will make a great team. I’m looking forward to hearing from you and assisting you in reaching your math goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I earned straight A's in algebra and have extensive experience sharing my knowledge with students.

Algebra 2

I earned straight A's in algebra and have tutored thousands of students in this subject.

Calculus

I earned straight A's in Calculus in college, and have extensive experience tutoring this subject.

Chemistry

I excelled in general chemistry courses in both high school and college.

Elementary Math

I excelled in math throughout elementary school, and on through my engineering degree, as it was and is a favorite subject of mine. I am particularly concerned with the teaching of elementary mathematics, as it lays the foundation for all future math learning. I understand that the concepts can be confusing at first, and I am a patient teacher with all ages of students. My belief is that repeated practice is crucial to developing skills at this level of mathematics. My goals are working toward accuracy first, and then working to improve speed.

Geometry

I earned an A in geometry in junior high school, and have used it throughout the remainder of my math and engineering studies. I have tutored students in geometry for the past seven years and have helped many students with this subject. I am particularly skilled at helping to make the subject matter understandable by cutting through the technical terms and explaining the topic in plain language.

Physics

I earned straight A's in my year of physics courses at UCSD, prior to completing my engineering degree at SDSU. In addition, over the past seven years I have tutored many students in various topics from the physics curriculum, including mechanics, gravitation, electro-magnetism, and optics.

Prealgebra

I excelled in all algebra topics as a student, and have used algebra extensively in my engineering studies. I also have extensive experience assisting students with pre-algebra and algebra topics.

Precalculus

I excelled in my own precalculus coursework, and have been tutoring students in this subject for several years.

Probability

I excelled in probability subjects when taking various math and statistics courses. I have tutored students in probability and statistics for the past seven years. Over that time, I have helped thousands of students taking statistics courses understand various concepts in probability.

Proofreading

I was an A student in English from middle school through college, and am fortunate to possess excellent writing skills. Extensive reading and writing has given me a well-tuned ear which helps me catch words and phrases which do not sound correct, either due to slight differences in meaning, mismatched tenses, or other pitfalls which may cause a reader to pause or lose track of the main idea. Rather than being overly strict about grammar rules, I understand that there are often creative reasons for breaking the rules that were taught to us as students. My approach is to work with an author to help craft the best possible composition, without treading upon their creativity, rather than simply dictating rules which must be followed.

SAT Math

I have successfully tutored thousands of students in the math subjects and skills that are covered in the SAT test.

Statistics

I earned A's in statistics courses in college, and I have been tutoring students in statistics online for the past seven years. I have helped thousands of students with their statistics coursework, and am quite proficient at explaining the material in a manner which cuts through the jargon and technical language.
