I was a high school English, Theater and Speech teacher for 32 years. I attended Michigan State for my B.A. and Credential in English and National University for my M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction. My programs were highly successful and I always had extra large classes due to my popularity and methods as a teacher. I was the Drama Director and directed over 200 shows and in this capacity I was involved with kids from alI groups on campus.
I love kids and they know it. I love teaching and kids know it! I have the gift of being able to reach my students where and how they need it. Many of my students consider me a "success coach" rather than just a teacher and for that I am grateful, because that description is my motivation for teaching. It is with this quality that I approach tutoring. I tutored for 4 years in the after school program at Santana High. I also taught a GED class based on individual instruction. My goal is to facilitate others to become the best communicators they can be, via reading, writing and speaking. Learning that there are specific techniques and methods to get one's message across is of vital importance and anyone can do it well by learning the specifics.
I have also enjoyed teaching ESL to kids as well as adults. I do not have a credential in this area but was allowed to teach it in the Adult School setting. I use my theatrical background to build confidence by making my lessons lively and fun. Language is my specialty and helping others to master English is exciting to me. I have received many awards which reflect my style and philosophy, such as: Old Globe Theater Award for Excellence in Teaching, San Diego Innovative Teacher Award, Peacekeeper Award, Resource Teacher Grant, to name a few.
I look forward to helping you reach your educational goals by building skills and confidence. I will give verbal and written feedback as to the progress in meeting your goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
