About Michael

I have 12 years paid tutoring experience and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from UCSD with a minor in Science Education. Most of my tutoring experience is with students between grades 7-12 primarily in Mathematics, but also Physics and Chemistry. I travel a lot between OC and LA so I can come to you, either at your home or a neutral location such as a library.

I love learning and I love helping others learn. It makes me really happy to see students succeed and grow in confidence as they master things may have lost hope of even understanding. When the light bulb turns on you can see the light come out through their eyes and countenance. That's why I love tutoring and do it full time.

My goal as a tutor is to teach myself out of a job. My approach to this is not solely teaching a student how to solve a math/science problem or answer a test question, but teaching them how to learn. In my 12 years of paid tutoring experience, I've found that most people that struggle with math and science lack the answers because they don't have the right questions. Throughout the process of teaching the current learning material, I address meta-cognitive questioning and tools for building upon the student's conceptual framework. Fancy words for how to ask questions and remember what you've learned. The school system is so focused on results that they forget the process and students become lost. But when the process is correct then elevated results will follow.

The results I have had from my approach are: higher grades, students progressively needing less tutoring time, an increased learning pace, and academic confidence. As they learn what to be thinking about while learning they become confident enough in their learning process to ask questions in class in order to understand the more difficult concepts. As the student becomes better at remembering what they've learned their learning pace increases dramatically because mathematics builds upon the previous concepts. When the student's learning pace has increased so they are learning the difficult concepts in class and they need less or no time with me outside of class is when I am the most excited about my job.

I love tutoring and I look forward to helping you reach your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Scored 35/36 on the Math section.

ACT Science

Scored a 36/36 on the ACT Science section.

Calculus

Degree in Aerospace Engineering.

Chemistry

Aerospace engineering degree

Mechanical Engineering

I have a degree in Aerospace Engineering. The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is one department at UCSD. The difference in the required classes was Aerospace had a couple more required structural classes while mechanical had those class slots open as technical electives.

Physics

Bachelors in aerospace engineering
5/5 on AP exam

Volleyball

I played indoor volleyball for BYU and UCSD. I am currently pursuing Beach volleyball professionally and am part of the Elite Developmental Program of USA training for the 2020 Olympic games.

Very Polite and Positive

I am very impressed with Michael. He is a very patient and positive with my son. He reviewed Geometry and Chemistry in one session which is great. We will have him back to help again.
