I don't look upon tutoring so much as a job as a gift I can give to other people. It gives me so much pleasure to give someone a boost in a particular subject. Sometime, just a small boost is enough to get someone over a hurdle, or build their confidence to the point where they can "fly" on their own. Others need more sustained support, and I am more than happy to provide that, too.
Currently, I am certified to tutor French, English as a Second Language, the California Basic Skills Educational Skills Test or CBEST, and Elementary Math. I have taught or tutored these subjects for more than 20 years.
Please check under each subject for further details about my experience and my particular approach.

Geraldine is very kind, patient and intelligent. I always learn so much each time I meet with her. She is very easy to get a hold of and returns emails quickly. I have learned more from her than I have learned from my French professor. Geraldine loves French so she is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. I have fun during our sessions!
She has the knack of pulling tricks out of her head to cement a concept. For example, mnemonic devices, illustrations, how the word was derived (its origin, etc.)
The first day we met with Geri was the day before my daughter's French vocabulary test. Geri methodically reviewed each word with my daughter. Gave her context to how the words are used and why. This helped her with her confidence and eased her fears of the test. I am pleased with the encouragement she provided and her patient mannerism. I am hopeful that her grades will improve with this type of encouragement and guidance.
Geraldine has really taken the time to understand and address my son's particular needs as a student. She definitely does not take the "one size fits all" approach. She has made every effort to understand what the requirements of the particular professor will be, the elements of the class which will be most challenging for my son, and how best to support him in those areas. She has exceeded expectations!
Geraldine is very knowledgeable, professional and very patient. She is a dedicated tutor. She has helped my daughter immensely in French 3. Her feedback is excellent. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
In preparation for a state standardized exam, I was fortunate to have been tutored by Geraldine in mathematics.
It has been quite a while since I have been a student and understanding formulas in algebra and geometry were required of me. I was in need of a detailed review of math from grades 9-12 in just three weeks and that is exactly what Geraldine did for me!
From our first tutoring session I felt comfortable with Geraldine's teaching style. She was patient, kind, and committed to my understanding of the math concepts we covered. Sometimes Geraldine would have to explain the problem from several approaches until I "got it" and she did this with the utmost patience and perseverance.
Geraldine was always punctual and was very generous with her time, she would not end our sessions until we had accomplished our agenda.
I would highly recommend Geraldine to anyone in need of a math tutor!
Geraldine is the name of my tutor and she is excellent, she has provided me with all the help and confidence a person can avail themselves with. However, I am sick and not able to take advantage of her services. She should go into the teaching field she is so good. I will retain these services when my condition gets better. Thank you again for you services.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I started learning French when I was 14, then continued at university level. After this, I lived in Bordeaux, France for 6 years. Many native speakers have remarked on the quality of my French accent.
I have a California Teaching Credential in Adult Education, with specialization in French. My 15-plus years of TEACHING EXPERIENCE covers French conversation groups as well as evening classes in French.
My TUTORING EXPERIENCE encompasses all levels - from absolute beginners to French majors at college. And my students have ranged in age from 11-year-olds right through to mature adults.
I love helping students to gain mastery of what may seem difficult at first. It gives me such pleasure to see my students do well!
I believe that the reason I have had such success with my students is threefold. First, because I too have had to learn the language as a speaker of English, I am very familiar with the pitfalls and difficulties that English speakers face when learning French. And that gives me patience! Secondly, my graduate studies in linguistics have given me useful and practical information that helps my students in their learning of French grammatical structures, meanings, and pronunciation. And finally, I have a real interest in - and flair for - adapting both the teaching materials and my approach to the aptitudes, interests, and needs of each student.
Whether you want to make sense of French grammar, improve your accent or your fluency, prepare for a test, or introduce your child to this beautiful and surprisingly accessible language, I'm sure I can help you achieve your goals.
I look forward to speaking with you and hearing what your needs and interests are.
